TOPIC: Boo the Goal Review

Boo! Yes boo goal reviews every time.

The AFL's knee-jerk technical solution to a score validation problem is ruining it for the crowd and those watching the footy on their screens. The interminable delay takes away the goal-scoring experience.

The issue about umpires being unsure of goal, point, mark or out-of-bounds is usually (imho) a result of the umpire not being in the best position to judge the score. This is a people problem. It isn't a technical problem - "Oh we don't have the right camera angles, the camera definition isn't great enough and we don't have enough cameras at every ground."

Occam's Razor: Have another goal umpire. Or two. Or three. I don't care how many they have. But by having an umpire in the right position to judge the scoring attempts will produce much more immediate decisions. If, on the rare occasion, you have a disagreement with the umpiring team, go to the video review. This will keep the game flowing.

The goal reviews are a blight on our game.

What are we trying to achieve? Perfection?

Can't happen. Thing that needs changing is our inability to deal with decisions that don't go our way.

Cricket captains now moan about not getting enough "umpires calls".....

I watched a West Coast goal review. You could clearly see the middle finger of the Richmond player move independently of the other fingers as the ball passed. It wasn't magic - the ball actually touched it. But they ignored this and called it a goal.

If it’s the same review I saw roger, on first look I thought the same. But on further examination it was actually the leg of a player in the background whose knee was bent. I’m serious. Go back and check it out.

Yes yes yes Merc. What this game needs is more umpires. I’ve been saying it for years! I’m sure Raggy would agree

Four field umpires have improved the quality of umpiring ….

Umm let me think on it.

I think the non-officiating umpires should put their whistle in their sock or shorts just like the goal kickers with their mouth guard.
That way only 1 umpire should have full power to pay attention and not worry about the other whistle blowers...

I'll tell you what I'm sick of. Sick of listening to every football commentator bad-mouthing the video review system, bad-mouthinh the goal umpires for even requesting reviews, complaining that the ball should automatically be rushed back to the centre for the next bounce because they get reviewed upstairs anyway. FFS! As fans we all asked for these reviews to be implemented in the name of fairness and now we can't stop the bloody TV commentators from gas-bagging on about the shortcomings of the system every time a review is called, and how much time is being wasted; and that the game needs to be speeded up. Why do people think that the games needs speeding up - I don' understand it.

I, for one, I love watching the reviews. I don't care if they take up extra minutes. I love when I squint my eyes at the slow motion replay and see a player's fourth finger swing back in an unnatural manner when the ball passes. TOUCHED! I love when I think I see the rotation of the ball change in flight as it passes the post. BOOM! HIT THE POST! Suffer in your jocks, Carlton!

I agree we don’t need to speed the game up but better technology to get accurate reviews would be great.

We didn't all ask for it, don't all want it and, least of all, don't enjoy the removal of the enjoyment of celebrating a goal, or not, as it happens

I’ve said it before, but I’d just prefer they tweak the rules to reduce the number of reviews required. If it touches the post on the way through - doesn’t matter it’s a goal. If they aren’t sure if it’s a point or OOF – then it’s OOF (unless it’s a close game and it’s time on in the last quarter). If a player gets a fingernail on the ball off the boot 30m from goal and the umpire doesn’t see it – doesn’t matter. Or alternatively for the touched decision, give the defender a chance to call for an appeal. If the review conclusively shows it wasn’t touched (ie, the defender lied), the other team gets the goal and a free kick from the centre.

That basically leaves the reviews for where the umpire genuinely can’t see something, like whether it was marked/touched on the line, or the mad scramble in the square.

The idea of spending the money to insert and track a chip in the ball to determine whether it clips a coat paint on a post of the way through feels very late-stage capitalism.

A chip in a ball may be capitalistic largesse, but how about using better video? Rugby league seem to have a far better system in place.
