I think we would have to trade for him and Peter Vlahos on SEN claiming we're offering him up to 5 years as a replacement for Nat Fyfe when he retires. That worries me and I'm sure some of our young midfielders would be a bit concerned if this were the case. Think Johnson, Erasmus and definitely Brodie

Am I right that O'Meara and Brodie are both signed up until 2026? For all the penny pinching we did with guys like Logue, Henry and Acres who were mostly first-choice players for us, to then go and spend money on O'Meara and Brodie to really be at the margins of the team, seems a bit questionable.

I quite like Baker though, and as a Switta / Schulz type I think his value is really appreciated inside clubs and in particular by a coach like JLo. I'm sure he'll follow the coach's directions to the letter and do all the one percenters.

But would it kill us to go out looking for an absolute gunslinger of a small forward?

I do like Baker, but not at the expense that has been mentioned, 5 year deals and 2 first rounders as trade exchange. Richmond would be the ones laughing if this happened. Our worst first round pick and a third round pick at most. If we did get him he would be competing with Brodie, O'Meara, Johnson, Banfield Switta and Erasmus for a spot in the seniors. Not a great piece of development for Johnson, Erasmus or even Cooper Simpson for that matter and he is no Nat Fyfe

Baker would require a trade and that makes it untenable for mine. Given we only have 1st round picks (and Saints 2nd rd pick) which are far more than he's worth to us however what Richmond would feel entitled to, this will not go well.

Baker is a small inside midfielder who can play on a flank and that is not something we need. All he'll do is take midfield time from our existing logjam of midfielders while taking up a large portion of our salary cap. He isn't a small forward and recruiting him to play that role is a waste of Baker and our cap.

I would rather use our picks on top 20 selections rather than grabbing a mid to good tier older player that isn't in a position of need. Grabbing a McDonald who is 5 years younger and plays in a position of need is a very different thing to a bloke who will be 27 and stall the development of our young inside midfielders like Serong, Brayshaw, Johnson, Erasmus and Simpson. Even Brodie and JOM not getting a starting gig there and having to play half forward most of their time is evidence of this.

If we can't get a high level player who is relatively young and improves our side significantly, throwing away our salary cap and draft capital is a massive mistake.

Well apparently we were chasing Errol Gulden at one stage who is a jet and definitely fits the profile but he's signed long term for Sydney as well. We could look at other young West Australian over East who are not playing seniors however they are obviously not the class of player we require at the moment.

If they aren't elite or projecting that way, there's no real reason to throw our 1st round draft picks at them. With a lot of draft capital and plenty of father son and academy bids likely, sides will be clamouring for our multiple high value picks. We could well package our picks up for a higher one which results in a more talented kid or roll over a 1st rounder into someone else's 1st round pick next year when Chad Warner comes out of contract.

There's a lot of possibilities but blowing our early picks in a bad deal for a mid-range player that is not a need would be a mistake. Aish is a better utility anyway.

The good thing about the Baker trade rumour is that most articles are quoting “Peter Vlahos”. I’ve never seen him with an early scoop that has panned out.
Surely if we did in fact chase Baker we wouldn’t offer up one, let alone two first round picks.
I would say brace yourselves guys because there will be plenty of average journos coming up with half baked theories on who we are going to trade in for our picks.
