I'm super pleased to see Matt Taberner back in the side, and, if he can stay fit, he'll be a real asset to our forward line. It's time the bloke was given credit for his performances rather than scapegoated for his early, often imagined, issues.
Look at the three years from 2020 to 2022 before he was sidelined by injury lastyear. In his 45 games he kicked 89 goals (to all intents and purposes the 2 goals per game KPI ).
One reason for his output over this period was his impressive accuracy (remember this is the guy who was pilloried for his goalkicking). His conversion rate over the period was an elite 70%.
On these figures, he is almost as accurate as Jye Amiss (72%) and a little more productive than Jye (1.88 goals per game). Matt's still only 30. he's a 198cm 100kg monster with a terrific tank.

Amiss, Treacy, Jackson AND Taberner. That's scary.

That's a disappointing list of additions to the bench outside the returning Walker and debut of Draper.

Tabs has had a long time out of the game and has been well and truly outperformed by Voss. Against North is a great opportunity to give the younger and better performed option a run and to give him some time learning to work with Amiss and Treacy. Going back to Tabs who has struggled in recent times, is on the wrong side of 30 and is coming back off an injury is just repeating the past and doesn't show any focus on the future of the club.

Similarly, going back to another player on the wrong side of 30 (O'Meara) who is coming back off injury and hasn't really shown much form with us opposed to a young talented midfielder (Ras) who has already had his growth stunted by lack of opportunity outside of a vest is so short sighted. Ras barely clocked any time on ground last week while also not getting a run with Peel, restricting his growth as a player or ability to adjust to the pace at AFL level. Give him a proper run.

Two very disappointing decisions for players that are on their last legs opposed to kids who should be establishing themselves at AFL level and need opportunity.

I agree Biz, if the older player is an outright better prospect (ie Fyfe), then that’s ok, play them. But when you are getting little to no benefit from the older player, then give the young guys a crack who still have improvement in them.

I really like Young in the midfield, and hope he spends plenty of time there this year, but it's great he can go back and play as a half back if we need him.

There's no doubt our recruiters nailed the 2019 draft, and we now have the best three players from that year in Young, Serong, and Jackson.

I'm struggling to keep my excitement in check!

RR - I thought O'Meara looked pretty good in the pre-season matches. Well, much better than last year anyway.

Still not convinced with Erasmus. He's played one good game and that was pre-season.

How many other full games has Ras been allowed to play, let alone in the midfield rotation?! It just doesn't happen. He's either subbed on, subbed off or played in the forwardline. How is he supposed to develop with that? Not well is the answer.

You could say the same thing about Fyfe as Taberner & O'Meara - injured, wrong side of 30, etc. but he has come back well.

Pendlebury & Sidebottom were 300 game premiership players. If you play everyone under 23 you'll get smashed every week like we are enjoying what's happening to the Slime and Hawthorn.

Give Taberner his turn - if it doesn't work out or he gets injured again, then fair enough.

The difference being, Fyfe is performing well in his role and is a 2x brownlow medalist. Tabs and JOM haven't done much of note in years and are coming back from injuries while lacking any form.

I hear where you’re coming from Bizkit, but there’s a little bit of chicken-and-egg about it. Is Ras being inhibited from displaying his talents because he’s not getting an opportunity or continuity of games, or is he not getting an opportunity because when he plays he’s not showing enough?

I honestly don’t know, but he hasn’t really taken a game by the scruff at any point.

My guess is he’ll be on the periphery for the start of the season, but when we get some injuries he’ll slot in, get a bank of games, and start to look comfortable.

Ras may turn into a good or very good midfielder one day, but unfortunately I will always see him as the player we picked instead of JVR.

Raz should have a chat to Sturt about the nuances of the selection process.

Longmuir’s under pressure, 1 year contract extension or not, as are all AFL coaches, just ask MacRae how he’s going.

Longmuir’s out to win enough games to qualify for finals and fair enough. It’s likely he sees a lower risk with experience on the ground.

Erasmus is playing better football than Caleb Serong after 19 games.

He was 17 when he was drafted. December birthday. He recently turned 20. His first preseason apparently he did 50 per cent of the work load.

You lot are out of your minds.
