TOPIC: So. What we do know. 2024

What we know, is that we’ve a squad that’s much better than delivering 14th after 23 games of footy. The 2024 season is in the lap of the players and coaches to play some exciting football. If finishing 14th the year before isn’t motivation to prove something, I’ve wasted 30 years watching.

So much doom and gloom. We have the 4th youngest list and they've played the 2nd least number of games with our starting 22 generally competing for the youngest in the comp. How are people so negative about all the young talent we have running around that recently won a final against all odds?

Strap in and enjoy the ride, there will be ups and downs but that's a part of being a Freo fan. I can't wait to see Brayshaw and Serong breaking out of the centre and beating tackles, Amiss slotting kicks most of us can only dream of, Young and Johnson delivering passes lace out from the middle, Cox towering over the defence, Clark and Walker breaking lines running off half back, Jackson the unicorn doing crazy things and all the rest of the young guns we have.

Stop buying into the OOFTIT media's expectations and dooming about their stupid bias when they try to distract from how terrible the OOFTIT's are.

Biz I wish I had your optimism for the season ahead. The way you are describing us it looks great on paper.

Problem is we play on grass.

Hopefully we play better than we did against Port.

We played Port who finished 3rd last year with a young side themselves. In Adelaide. In a pre-season game. With a lot of players missing or injured. With very little experience on the field. Effectively having one bad quarter and a bit.

It's not that bad.

I agree with you, bizkit, that there is much to be eager to see. Those things are not known yet. Apart from youth.

What we know as of now are

Carlton are the getting away with it team of 2024

Brisbane appear ripe for the picking

You have to move it fast, precise, low, not always long, and with overlap. Pause followed by high to a contest used to mean 50:50. Easy way to not make a decision but remain somewhat neutral ball. Now it equals slaughter setup.

Did you see how we moved the ball in the other pre-season game?

Doom and gloom, no, realist and high expectation, yes, and I don’t apologise for that.

Out of interest Biz, where do you think we’ll finish on the ladder this year.

There are too many variables that effect whether a side wins or loses games which makes it worthless to guess how thinks will end up 5/6 months from now. From a key player like Darcy going down to the natural improvement of almost everyone in the squad due to a pre-season of running and strength, to the form and fitness of other sides, a lot of things can effect how we perform.

I don't look at final results or an expectation for the year end because that's not what I watch footy for and I think there's far too much context to the progress and results of sides. It's the entertainment and fun ride along the way, the journey to the top that fans should look at. If you get too obsessed with win/loss then you're not going to have a good time and it will make the ascent all that much tougher. What I do know is we're on the right track and I can very easily see us playing and winning finals, even that last one in September. There's no side I look at as being too formidable and tough to beat.

"Did you see how we moved the ball in the other pre-season game?"

Well, yes, which (i) perhaps goes a way toward proving my point that you have to move it this way and (ii) could raise the question over how easy it is to move the ball against witches hats.

Let's not be witches hats.

Thanks Biz and honestly, I get your point. The thing is, when I look around me at games, not many members/supporters are having fun when we don’t look like we’ve got any system to be competitive ie blokes looking around looking baffled as to what to do next. That’s all fans are expecting, some system, a lot of competitiveness and effort, it’s not too much to expect when you’ve got a half decent list. Supporters who are into the ‘journey’, aren’t we all at some stage, are ones who have reached or won a GF or two and whose lists are on the slide or being rebuilt ie Cats, Tigers etc, I think we’re past that phase, or should be.

Anyway, lots of excitement leading into round 1, it is round 1 isn’t it : ) ?

Enjoy the footy Dlanders, let’s beat Brisvegas. If Carlton can come back from 7 goals down at the Gabba, we’ve got this in the bag.
