It was a dour note on what was otherwise an exciting morning for Freo fans as the race for spots in the Dockers forward line ramped up further with Josh Treacy making an impressive pre-season statement.
Treacy shared a forward line with Jye Amiss in Fremantle’s first full intra-club of the summer and booted three goals.
It comes after a strong pre-season from the rejuvenated Matt Taberner, pushing his case for a return after injury crippled his 2023 season.
The veteran big man kicked a first-quarter goal as the squad was split almost down the middle for their first more organised intra-club of their push towards round one.
But Amiss and Treacy are again firming as the club’s first-choice forward duo.
Third-year forward Amiss kicked three majors of his own.
And train-on Patrick Voss did his case for one of two vacant list spots no harm in a powerful display where he booted four goals.
The former Essendon-listed key-position player kicked a neat one through traffic in the opening term, then another in the third and back-to-back goals in the last - including one booming set-shot from the paint of 50.
Voss worked in tandem with Taberner and showed his athleticism and ground-level skills in one his final major hit-outs before the looming Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period deadline.
Taberner wouldn’t be completely outdone, though, coming from three deep to take the best contested mark of the day and convert from some distance.
Woodville West-Torrens livewire Max Beattie and Claremont tall target Sam van Rooyen also played. Van Rooyen, the brother of Melbourne’s Jacob, kicked a first-quarter goal.
First-round draft pick Cooper Simpson also impressed and could be added into the mix for a battle for small forward spots.
Drafted predominately as a midfielder, the Victorian pushed forward after a run on-ball early in the match and kicked an impressive goal where he collected the ball, steadied himself, and curled a ball home with the outside of his boot.
The seemingly ageless veteran Michael Walters impressed again and Michael Frederick trained strongly.
