I am concerned about Shanes point about "journalists" watching the game. A quick bit research on becoming a journalist
here made me stop and see if I could be a sports journalist.
What Skills Do You Need to Become a Sports Journo?
A passion or keen interest in all forms of sport and current sporting events -
I have a foxtel subscription. I preferentially watch the sport channels.
An ability to ‘chase’ or hunt down stories and build networks that consistently lead to good stories -
I have internet access
Excellent creative writing and editing skills, with the capacity to find story angles, yet write objectively and without bias
Great research, interviewing, and fact-checking skills -
I can make sh1t up and present it with a straight face. I actually have lots of letters after my name
Willingness to learn about all facets of journalism (not just sports reporting) -
I have been watching the Bruce Lehrman/Brittany Higgins story and have learnt things eg Lisa Wilkinson does not like be compared to a "tabloid journalist."
Willingness to start “at the bottom” and even in another journalism area
I may struggle to be considered a lesser journalist than a few of the creative writers out there.
Willingness to travel to where the sport/news is happening.
Travel from my computer to the TV and back is second nature to me. I also have some experience in accepting, travel, accommodation and free tickets when offered. My skill set responds to free alcohol.
A strong understanding of social media and online media
I have deleted all the images off my phone
An ability to work independently, without much supervision
When I am making sh1t up it is best I am not being supervised
I concede that watching the game could lead to some advantages when writing about a sport but I think I tick as many boxes as some sports journalists who are actually paid for their content. I was initially concerned I may have some bias, but I do well on the Eddie Maguire scale so I dismissed that as a potential issue.
My first article will be titled Head Knock: Venable or Vegetable. Will that be enough or do I need to pad it out with content?
