I know this will be philosophically worse than arguing with a plank of wood, but I would like to discuss the premise of the Sumich article, ostensibly this: "...Jackson should lead Fremantle’s ruck and on-ball division for the next decade, leaving severe uncertainty on just where Darcy fits into a Dockers best starting line-up..."
Put simply, how about No he should not- No, no uncertainty at all, and ...hmm, how about 'First' Ruck?
Rucking Jackson fulltime is a waste of talent, and potentially breaks him against the other teams' ruckmen. Then what have we achieved? Darcy is the foundation of our build, he is smart at bouncedown and stoppages, in both where and when he commits his body, and getting the ball to advantage. Big Swaggy is our most influential player, when he is on song he is
dominant. Have a look at our come from behind win in gather round this year, this is the blueprint for these two guys, Darcy just imposing himself on contests around the ground after half time, and Jackson kicking a couple of clutch goals and having multiple significant score involvements. The flexibility to also change it up with these two young talents is a point of difference for us and takes a fair bit of planning for oppositions to counter pre-game, and then again on match day.
Darcy being injury-prone is a bit disingenuous. He's actually been really durable, capable of playing with those leg/knee issues and I think we put the cue in the rack with him late last season when things didn't go our way. Since Sandilands retired at the end of 2019, Darcy has played 72 of 89 possible games, not bad for a young big guy in really the most physically impactful role in AFL. Yes Jackson shone in a few of those last games without him, but that speaks more to the talent of Jackson than anything else.
TL;DR- Suma is dumb. If we didn't have Darcy and broke Jackson against bigger bodies rucking fulltime, we would waste the talent in this squad and a tilt at the biggest prize.
