While Hypen may think there isn't much online to help track draftees, there's actually a tonne of content these days that are easily available (pretty much all under-age games are broadcast these days, especially the Melbourne players who have school games broadcast) and there's a tonne of sites full of scouting notes and reviews of every one of those games, academies and inside information.

There hasn't been a proper thread on our draftees outside of Odin so thought I'd give a bit of a summary so everyone can get to know our draftees.

You can check out Coopers draft profile here which has a lot of information about him as well as links to other articles and stats.

Cooper is one who was projecting very high but due to injury, wasn't able to show off his abilities as much as many of the others available on draft day. However, when he was on the field, he looked electric and used his pace, clean touch and high skill level to have a large impact on games. His question mark is to step up in big games although that is mostly due to being unavailable for the big games to prove himself. He could well be the biggest steal of the draft if he can find fitness (none of his injuries were particularly rough ones, more corks and the like) which shouldn't be too much of an issue in an AFL program.

There's around 20+ youtube videos on Cooper along with plenty of his matches and interviews available on kayo or various other areas of the internet but the videos I prefer to get to know draftees through come from the WA produced Road to the Draft series which is a lot more relaxed and laid back. It gives a much better idea of who the kids are we're drafting as well as how they interact with people and their mates. It's a great series I watch throughout the year and Cooper looked like a fantastic kid from his game of PIG plus interview afterwards.

Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I also enjoy your reports Biz, I hope they keep coming.
I like researching all the potential draftees online too, lucky I'm not a recruiter because every player I check out I think will be a champion, I guess that's because they are all underage superstars at that stage in their development. The reality is they are just names at the moment.
Let's hope the kids we recruited will go on to bigger things, I think our club has a good record in developing our kids.

Thought I might add in this article about Simpson before the draft from Code Sports. It's behind a pay wall but gives an insight into his struggles this season and his work ethic.

Some interesting quotes from the article about his injuries include:

"The midfielder had brilliantly won the Stingrays’ best and fairest as a bottom-age player last year, the first Ray to do so since future Swans great Luke Parker. Going into 2023, Simpson was placed in the AFL Academy and named co-captain of the Stingrays. Cox and region manager Toby Jedwab had high hopes for what he would achieve, for his club and for Vic Country on the national stage.
But corkies to his quads and shin – the result of bad luck, not any underlying issue with his body – held back a player his coach says has “huge talent’’ and is “an ultimate professional’’."

"Simpson’s first setback came before the season had even started, copping a corkie at the “captain’s run’’ and missing round one. He picked up the same injury twice in the following few weeks. And, blow of blows, he suffered another corkie against South Australia in Vic Country’s first game at the national Under 18 championships. He did not play for Country again.
“I went to pick up a ground-ball and a big ruckman came bolting straight into the side of my leg. It was a bad one. It felt like a sledgehammer going into my leg. Extremely painful. I missed the whole carnival and was out for five or six weeks,’’ Simpson says."

So, it seems Cooper is our new number 29 and Pav met him at the airport. Nice :-)

His acceleration out of congestion is a little reminiscent of Judd...

Remember what the #29 did to Valente's career?
Have we learned nothing. He's doomed.
Shame - he sort of reminded me of Judd.

Spare a thought for Troy Cook Colonel, he'd be looking over his shoulder while driving now too.
