I get that I'm amongst the younger crowd on dockerland but the number of posts here still claiming, "look a bear" is unbelievable. If your post on Woodside killing the environment amounts to "look at how xxxx deals with the environment/climate etc" have another look in the mirror. Woodside do horrible things to the planet and face little consequence because of how much money they splash around to avoid it. Being older should mean you're more readily able to think critically, not double down on ignoring societal issues.

Don't fall for their rubbish. Be better.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Why is it so hard for people to grasp that some of us would like to see energy companies shift their business to renewable energy over the coming years in a methodical way? We wan't them to stay in business. Like when deodorant put a hole in the ozone layer. Remember that, were you dills saying we cant stop using spray on deodorant? We still needed deodorant- well I can't talk for East Fremantle supporters. Just make a responsible product. Its not as hard as many will have us think.

Straddo is not correct. Don't listen to him on this one.

Whilst cheap carbon is available there will always be a market. Cause some people just don't care. Just read this thread if you don't believe me.

Biz, I was sort of avoiding getting involved in this debate, but I don't think you can give old people a free pass on this. The scientists have been warning about the risks of environmental damage, as a result of human intervention, for a long time. Rachel Carson released Silent Spring in 1962. It was about the the damage being done to our environment by DDT but tellingly took on the false claims made by powerful companies in relation to marketing. It is often credited with the birth of the environmental movement. The United Nations created the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Stockholm, Sweden to address global environmental degradation in the early 1970's.
The problem is, in my view, is that it is very easy to confuse people with complex data and difficult solutions, and then reassure them with a simple answer. People often look for the solution they wish to hear, and will sacrifice facts to achieve that outcome.
I think there is a reasonable text on Sustainable energy here although it is possibly a bit dated now.
Anyway, I don't think you should a give free pass to those who choose to be misinformed. This respecting your elders is just a phrase old people like to use. Then again, I doubt anyone here is going to read the 382 page book I just posted a link too.

Almost everyone is concerned with climate change and agrees we should only be burning fossil fuels until we can stop. Woodside would prefer we burned them a bit longer than we need to. The footy club we support is helping them to do that in exchange for money.

Nothing Freo does with its sponsorship changes much about a global problem, but we are emotionally invested in the club and so we would prefer they do things they are generally for the betterment of society. It feels a little worse than other sponsorships because unlike Maccas or Crown people can’t opt out of climate change the way they can a burger or blackjack.

And I think it’s reasonable to prefer the club didn’t put things on the Freo jumper a reasonable proportion of fans would feel uncomfortable wearing.

As much as I agree with the majority on here I have kept my gas hot plates as the power is so often off up in the hills. I can at least boil water for a cuppa and a wash.. Until the power is better unfortunately that’s what I do. Sorry.

Not sure that justifies Dockers supporting them though

Hey Bizkit and Tragic, not sure why you guys feel the need to call out old people quite so much. In between sleeping and drooling some of us are still able to read and even think a bit, and not all of us are doubling down on ignoring societal values.I sometimes wonder why younger people feel the need to generalise so much...
Anyhow Tragic, as you rightly pointed out, that book of Sir David's is now a decade out of date. His lengthy exposition about how and why solar photovoltaics are the best answer to our need for carbon neutrality has very little to say about the storage which is a necessary feature of the firming and backup power needed for them. Currently there is none, as the best of batteries, lithium, are insufficient and still have a tendency toward conflagration.
Additionally, I'm concerned that under the current government's policy timelines, Australia needs to instal 22,000 solar photovoltaic cells (solar panels) per day for the next 7 years to achieve the 2030 reduction target.. If my old brain is about right, that equates to approximately 3 square kilometres per week until 2030. 3 square kilometres! Per week!
And not a lot grows under solar panels.
I'm all for the fastest way to net zero too, and in my opinion that means developing SMRs, but I don't think the discussion is assisted by alarmist, hysterical catastrophising either (e.g. "the planet is boiling" - Guiterres, "Woodside is destroying our country" - Ruth).

Hi Grandpa,

My post had this bit.
"The problem is, in my view, is that it is very easy to confuse people with complex data and difficult solutions, and then reassure them with a simple answer. People often look for the solution they wish to hear, and will sacrifice facts to achieve that outcome."
I am not young. I am well aware of issues including
finite resources
limits to storing power
nuclear fusion may never see the light of day etc etc
They are not valid excuses to do nothing.
Perhaps a Nero/Rome reference would strike a chord.

Grandpa, I like a little maths. And you've decided that 22,000 solar panels per day is the same as 3 square km a week. But assuming a 1.7m x 1m panel, I calculate 0.26 square km a week.
And my rule of thumb is that when I find one significant error in a post, I don't bother checking the rest of the "facts" in the post.

Your maths is correct, RR. And with 7461 solar panel installation companies in Australia (according to the first source I found), 22,000 panels per day works out to 3 panels per company per day.

That seems eminently reasonable to me. Regarding nothing growing under them, given that the vast majority are installed onto people's roofs that can only be a good thing.

If making an assumption, it’s a mathematical possibility the other person is correct.

‘To err is human, to forgive divine', in summary, is Alexander Pope's call to critics (and writers) not to forget their humanity when criticising or judging others. Making mistakes or 'erring' (when we get 'error', of course) is a natural part of being human.’
