No doubt that climate change is a serious problem that requires rapid change. However:
1) We are the ones using the fossil fuels that Woodside (et al) produce and/or the products they are used to make.
2) Gas is increasingly being seen as a necessary (evil) transition fuel until other energy sources are developed to replace it.
3) Woodside has a Board that has a fiduciary duty to do what's best for its shareholders. As a gas exploration and production company, the best thing it can do for its shareholders is produce gas. It has many initiatives to diversify from that core business, but it doesn't happen overnight, particularly given many of the new business areas require new technology or new markets.
4) Most of us are shareholders of Woodside through our super funds.

The problem with companies like Woodside is that they lobby governments to do things that are in their short-term interest, but not in our long-term interest. It is tough, but they need to realise that 20 years from now they won't be pumping gas.
And this is of course true of the gambling, drinking, and smoking lobbies too. They all want what makes them a buck now, and bugger the consequences. It is human nature. But that doesn't make it right.

Yes, Woodside, in its present form, should not survive. If they do, we don't.

No doubt some companies went broke when we took lead out of petrol. Some people lost very profitable businesses when slavery was abolished (not the slave owners in the UK though, they were handsomely compensated for the loss of their "property").

Woodside's current sponsorship deal with Freo expires in October. I haven't heard anything announced about an extension or a replacement.

Anyone got any idea where this is heading? I know mid-year there was a petition sent, and maybe it is too late or doesn't help, but if you haven't let the club know how you feel about this particular sponsorship this might be your last chance.

It was pretty funny watching Dead Eyes O'Neill complaining about protestors not being interested in discussing constructive avenues to transition, having signed off on drastic and unnecessary rapid expansion of gas producing, solely in the name of shareholder profit and management bonusses, while buying up the resources of other corporates trying to get out of fossil fuels. They are not interested in energy transition - they are interested in profit - massive profit. They are corporate villains not some wholesome local company who belong on the beloved purple jumper.
