Does anyone know when our current Woodside sponsorship finishes?

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

The second step would be everyone taking a pay cut because the income of the AFL players is mostly derived from drugs, poisons and gambling and hamburgers.

Did canning the Benson and Hedges world series really make a difference to the number of smokers? Or could it have been making ciggies $100 a packet.

If you support banning Woodside from footy, then do you also support $20/L for fuel and $20,000 a year for power?? Because I can guarantee that the latter will accelerate the move to renewables a hell of a lot faster then banning a logo on a shirt.

You mean like some sort of tax on Carbon?

People at Woodside believe that putting their logo on a shirt is worth spending a million dollars a year on. The tobacco companies thought that putting their logo on anything that would let them was worth a fortune as well. They don't do it to be generous, they can justify a benefit.

Maybe not on its own, but canning Benson & Hedges from sponsorship of the World Series was part of a much larger movement of similar actions that saw the number of smokers, and smoking related heath issues, decline

I thought most of the revenue came from Channel 7 / Foxtel. I think you're being a bit silly Shane.

Steady on, Davo. We’re talking about individual club sponsors, not purchasing the broadcast rights for the league from the league, aren’t we?

And I reckon most tv revenues, which they then pay to the afl, come from gambling, grog and grease mob advertising.

Clearly what's missing from this picture is an AFL advertising ethics committee. That's probably the best way to get really clear, concise and unbiased guidelines on who is allowed to be associated with the sport and who isn't.

In the meantime, if Woodside wants to throw millions at the club I I'm all for it.

Interesting that some want to remove sponsors that are fossil fuel producers because of they are significant carbon emitters (Woodside, Chevron, Santos etc). Unlike the tobacco (and gambling), our club and the league are completely reliant on fossil fuels to have a competition (eg transport etc.). It does seem completely hypocritical to say we don’t want certain industries to sponsor the clubs/ league but be completely dependent on their products to exist.

And where does it end. Steel manufacturing is responsible for 11% of global CO2 emissions. Clearly BHP, Rio and FMG are directly implicated in these emissions – should BHP be dropped from sponsoring AFLW? While we are at it; what about the Toyota AFL sponsorship? Ten million CO2 producing cars sold every year – should they be dumped?

I hope the club remains strong on the Woodside sponsorship arrangement.

There's no charging your electric car and scooter without fossil fuel power stations too. Bigger than big problem.

If you accept that the climate is disastrously changing because of the product Woodside sell, the point you are making is that they are a necessary evil.

The purpose of paying Fremantle money is to obscure the evil part, not assist the necessary part.

I would prefer we weren't involved in that.

Global warming is approaching "tipping point".
AI may be a more imminent risk if the intelligence of machines surpasses that of humans.
The rising risk of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear warheads.
Catastrophic events e.g. meteor strike
Microbiologic events including GM viruses, microbes jumping species associated with closer contact of humans and other fauna.
Alien invasion.
I have certainly missed other lower probability events.
And even if we mitigate the risks of those, Stephen Hawking's most famous theory about black holes proclaims that everything in the universe is doomed to evaporate.

Nero fiddled whilst Rome burnt done.
Tragic wants to watch the football.
