Morgs… Tabs is I’m sure a really nice guy although I havnt met him in person. That doesn’t mean he has an instinctive footy brain it just means he’s athletic. That’s his problem. Amis is a guy who plays like Gunston/Bruest type of forward by not leading into the path of his fellow forwards, by having a great set shop routine, by being able to take a hanger. Tabs is more like Treacy but without the defensive game, goal kicking ability and marking ability.

Taberner plays without thought or aspiration. There were times he couldn't be arsed putting his hands in the air.

He consistently was among the top players in the league for contested marks and probably covered more territory than anyone else at Freo. That’s a skill set that has value to most teams.

I reckon if Tabs and Brody Mihocek swapped places 5 years ago we’d be saying Mihicek had no idea how to position himself on a field for Freo, while Tabs would be seen as a useful cog in Collingwood’s forward line.

I'm with Morgan, and a bit tired of all the Tab dissing that goes about the joint, even here where blind adoration for anything even remotely purple should be an obligation.
It looks like his career, here at least, is coming to an end due to injury and the emergence of better alternatives, but I reckon he fought the good fight when the team gave him precious little, and has been lumbered with failings he never had.

Thanks, Matthew, for your 167 goals, 7th all time for Freo and 120 games (by the way, check out Tony Modra's stats for us - what a star). If that's it for you, our loss is mathematics' gain.

Tabs started his career with Super Pav still playing, then had wilderness years playing 'with' Kersten, McCarthy, Hogan and Lobb. He's had bad luck with injury as well.

I agree. A lot of Tabs’ failings were team failings.

Delivery and personnel in the forward line foremost. If he’d been second fiddle to a genuine full forward with a team/tactics that favoured the forwards then he would have thrived. As it is he battled it out and made a solid career.

Unfortunately for him now though, he is not an automatic starting 22 and will either be reduced to injury cover to let freo develop their future, or need to move.
