I'll say it, Hughes should not be in the side. He has struggled all year to find the football and when he has, he hasn't been damaging with it. He's made plenty of poor mistakes with the ball and is not improving given an extended run in a wing/half back role.

He had 9 touches on the weekend and that is only marginally behind his average this season of 13.9. He doesn't have speed but gets by on being able to run a little more than the kids. However, he turns 29 later in the year and is not a part of our future plans. Why are we playing someone who touches the ball 13 times a game and barely uses it when we have blokes like Erasmus, Johnson and Brodie in the emergency list who will find the ball, will use it and will learn far more?

It makes no sense. If we were struggling for numbers then sure, Hughes is handy depth. We aren't though so get games in the kids so they develop. Don't leave them languishing at Peel for older average players that are not going to be part of a premiership push.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Going to disagree Biz, since Hughes moved back two weeks ago he’s played his role well. He’s no winger and should never play that position again unless we have an injury crisis. As a placeholder for Chapman, I have no problem with him.
Aish is on my list of players who could make way for Johnson or Erasmus, his last month has been very poor.
The other would be Banfield who’s role could be filled by rotation of mids through his position, JOM, Fyfe, Erasmus and Johnson could all play the medium forward role as well as Banfield and gives us more flexibility to mix it up at stoppages.
My preferred team would be:
Out Aish, Banfield
In Erasmus, Johnson
Sub Brodie

Aish is ranked 7th for the club in average disposals, plays wing, onball, half back and sometimes tagger. 19 disposals compared to O'Driscoll's 12. There is no way he'll be dropped.
Schulz, Frederick, Banfield, Switkowski and Walters all average about the same disposals and goals.

Chapman coming back will put pressure on Hughes,he can't go back to wing even if O'Driscoll takes time to get fitter. The one for me under some pressure the last two weeks ,and even though the opposition put a lot of time into his game is micky ,he needs to kick a bag over the next two weeks for me for him to not lose his spot.

You simply don't take smart ball users out of a side - Mikey or Aish.

Sometimes I really wonder if we're all watching the same games.

Hughes and Banfield have played pretty well, where-as I was totally unsurprised that Erasmus was sub-ed out last week.

Brodie has to have upset someone or is just missing the play that comes naturally if you're working with Mundy.

It’s not reflected in his stats, but Aish seems a little off this season, but he’s such a versatile player I don’t think he should be dropped.

I don’t mind Hughes as defender because he players like a defender, and I think when the other team’s midfield gets on top our more attacking defenders can be exposed a little. On the body of work this year I think we can safely say he’s not a winger, so if that’s the spot we’re filling I think we should look elsewhere. I don’t see what we’d lose by playing one of Henry, Johnson or Erasmus there, or moving Freddy to the wing and adding someone like Sturt to the forward line.

O’Driscoll’s output hasn’t been good enough, but we desperately need his type of player, so I don’t know what option we have but to wait for him to hit his straps.

On Banfield, I reckon he does enough to stay in the side. He’s not elite at any one thing, but he gets it a little bit, gets a goal a game, puts on decent pressure and doesn’t get beaten in the air that often. In the aggregate that’s enough.

On paper that is a really good Fremantle side that should really take it up to Geelong.

Hughes is your classic older player. He will out-mark his opponent most of the time, and generally be stronger one-on-one.
Did you not like him selling the dummy last week Biz?

There were a number of poor disposals that worked out last week but for the most part, it was his lack of impact or influence. That's what it's been all season, that I just don't see his disposals damaging or impacting the play. That's something that needs to happen if you're playing on a wing all game and only touching the ball a dozen times.

I'm perfectly happy to give leeway to the kids learning that position but when a 28yo bloke lacks impact in an important position, it is just a waste. Get a kid in there. He moved back to half back where there's easier ball and is still completely lacking impact. I'd play Johnno off half back or shuffle people around to get Erasmus/Brodie on the field.

I liked Hughes but he's just not doing anything of note but take up a spot in the 22. His last 5 games he's had 9, 17, 16, 10 and 10 touches which is not good enough. Even Henry's 4 games this season saw him average 17 touches and have some level of impact running around. I don't see Hughes value at the moment over any of these kids who need game time. What is Hughes bringing that they can't?

Polly he is there to kick goals ,banfield gets the chop when we lose.
With competition for spots, you need to score.
Shooter and Freddie dont usually miss out on hitting the scoreboard.
So he is always looking for the free,a sign of older players struggling.
I love the guy ,but he's getting paid to score.
He may well kick a few over the next two weeks,if not then back to Peel.

Aish, O'Driscoll, Hughes are the three we carry. Good on Hughes for playing a position he isn't suited for, he's all heart and a favourite of mine. He's too slow and so is O'Driscoll to be on the wings.

Aish is soft. I don't rate him.

Hughes was not the answer on the wing but has been good filling in for Chapman. But I am thinking he makes way when Chappy comes back.

From what I've seen this season, you have to perservere with O'Driscoll on one wing and play or rotate Erasmus or Johnson on the other.

Aish is a Mr Fixit utility and is needed on the bench.

Fyfe has taken Brodie's spot and there's nothing much Will can do about it until there is an injury.

If the 3 Amigos (JJJ) can hold down the Key Forward roles, there's no place for Taberner either.

Overall, we still have depth to cover injuries or poor form.

It took them 6 weeks for the penny to drop but if Walyup move the ball quickly they can beat Geelong.
