I've said it many times, English is pretty rubbish as a ruckman. He excels at running around the ground as an extra link man and taking marks on midfielders. He is never going to be the player that Darcy is who can monster the ruck and aerial battle with pure size, strength and smarts. They are very different players.

If you have a competent midfield then you don't need an English in your side. Besides, Jackson is better as a roaming extra midfielder.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Bizkit, a couple of years I would have agreed with you, but only three players have had more hit outs than English this year.

Darcy and English are very different ruckmen, but I think they are clearly the best two ruckmen in the league. Darcy is a better fit for our current team – our best mids in Brayshaw and Serong are on the smaller side and so his clearance work is really valuable – but if Peter Sumich offered Darcy as a straight-swap for English I’m not sure the Bulldogs would take it.

He's 7th on average hitouts for the season and has played some sides who have nobody's for ruckman like Richmond, GWS and Port. His hitout win percentage is only 38.5% which is terrible compared to the top rucks of which Darcy leads at 58.9%. Just look at the Darcy vs English battle a few weeks ago when Darcy had 53 hit outs, he dominated him as a ruckman.

As a ruckman, English sits around mid-table. He can rack up the ball around the ground on midfielders though.

Sloby, I saw Dempsey tear WA apart when he wore the Big V at Subiaco Oval in the late 60s or thereabouts. Huge man, incredible skills and comparatively English is still immature as a ruckman. Give English a couple of years; I stand by the assertion that he isn't the best now but will be.

Well...I'm gonna put it out there....

Is Hodor our Greatest ever Draft selection??

#38, 2016 National Draft.

Yep, we've had better players - sure!... but from much higher draft picks. Luke Ryan, and Mickey B, are perhaps the 2 other contenders....

And everyone remembers the "fat kid" that turned up! I chuckle when i think of the 1st time i saw him , when he played in a preseason match in Gero.. Struggled to run out the half of the last quarter they put him on for. His jumper struggled to ' contain' him... Don't think he got a touch... maybe a handball...

But, Ive admired every thing he is, and has done, since.

He's full of Purple, and that's the main thing.

Sandi was a rookie pick and a late one at that.

Excellent point! ...thankyou Bizkit, ...(as per usual...)

Ok. Have absolutely nothing against Sandi, ...champion, and I love him.

But, ..next question, Is Hodor better?? ...and how would you compare the 2 at the same age, ...and, if Sandi has set ' The Standard ' ...what measures would you be measuring at the end of Hodor's carreer, to compare the 2...??

I'd suggest Hodor holds his marks better, ... kicks more reliably, probably has more influence in congestion , and, the forward line, ...and , MAYBE, he has more effective knockouts??...

I still reckon Sandi is great, .. .I miss him.!

What can be said, is, that we've been damned lucky to get 2 decades of great ruckman , for relatively low draft picks...

English is very impressive. He's quiet, but goes hard and is good at a lot of areas of the game. I'd put him at #2 behind Darcy, which is great given how bad he was when he started out.

For once I'm with you all the way Biz, English is probably most overrated ruckman going around. Any opposing ruck with a bit of muscle about him like Darcy, Nankervis, Grundy, Witts or Gawn to name a few just physically move him out of the way. He's more a mobile big man who, like Naitanui, is often caught out of position watching the ball go backwards and forwards over his head. And as a mobile big man Blicavs leaves him for dead and Luke Jackson will move past him as he matures more.

Oh Gumnut, I was going to let this go until you compared English to NicNat.

I think there are two questions: who is a better ruckman and who is a better player. Yes, in a ruck contest of course I would prefer Darcy to English (and maybe any other ruckman). But outside of the 70-odd hitouts a game, there is value in who is a better player over the ground. If you were picking Darcy or English as a ruck rover (which effectively a ruckman becomes for 2 hours outside of the 4 minutes of a game where they are rucking) then of course you’d take English. You have to weigh the importance of both roles to figure out who is the better ruckman.

It's like saying who is a better player between Alex Pearce and Brennan Cox. Pearce is a better defender, but Cox might be a better player. Or saying that Hayden Young isn’t a good player because he’s a defender who is not good at defending. Using the logic of who is purely better in the ruck contest to decide the best ruckman, then you would say Zac Dawson was better than both of Pearce and Cox (he always kept Hawkins in check.

But English gets 20 touches and 6 marks a game. To say the ball flies over him like NicNat who in his prime would barely get half of those touches and marks, is just a bit silly. Blicavs (15 touches and 3 marks) is closer to Nic Nat than English.

I wouldn’t trade Darcy for English, and I like the balance of Darcy and Jackson, but it would be interesting to see English and Jackson running around in the same team.
