I’m not sure if I’ve told this story here before, but back in 2016 there was a physio I used to go to, and one day we were having a chat and she said Pauline Hanson got a bit of a rough trot with the media because the way she spoke made her an easy target. I was in a vulnerable position, and so I answered her as honestly and diplomatically as I could, which is to say that I’m glad we have a representative senate, because it means that people of many different persuasions could have a voice in the Parliament; and that even though I don’t agree with Hanson, it’s a worse outcome when people at the fringes don’t feel they are represented in the Parliament at all.
Although that is true, what I mostly think is that I’m glad the far right nationalist crackpots we have in Parliament tend to be idiots, and not something even more dangerous.
Anyway, a few weeks later I head back to the physio, and as I walk in her hand is up, and she’s like ‘high five’, and I was confused, and beaming she says ‘Donald Trump!’…..and I awkwardly hi-fived her. I think about that hi-five a lot.
What’s this got to do with Sumich? Well, when he speaks he sounds like an idiot, when he writes you can't hear him speak, but he’s too much of an idiot to be really damaging. That piece is too overblown. Had he been more subtle about Darcy potentially leaving it would have probably hit harder. Instead he sounds like some old drunk in a bar telling stories.
And that’s Robbo’s job.
