So, imo letting Hogan go has been shown to be a mistake, as a contested marking, goal kicking forward, as we've seen, is hard to find. Plus we got basically nothing for him in the trade with GWS.

Similarly, another mistake appears to be losing Acres. Most weeks he's managed to pick up more disposals on his own as our two wingmen combined. His experience, the amount of ground he covers from back to forward and his link play is sorely missed.
He didn't particularly want a huge amount in his new contract, didn't really want to leave, but we weren't willing to budge as it was thought he could be easily covered. That certainly hasn't been the case. O'Driscoll and Henry are still young and inexperienced and we are now trying to make a wingman out of Hughes, who is better suited to the back line. Plus we got little for him in the trade.
Then to top it off, we recruit Worner as wingman then make him play as a half back for Peel. In either role he is always in the top few possession winners, but we won't play him.

It seems we sold the farm to Melbourne for Jackson, a promising but unproven big man, and to cover that cost we lost high picks and at least two well liked big players in Logue and Acres.

Currently Jackson’s our WC Kelly. I hope he proves me wrong, but at the moment there’s a lot of dancing around the contest, the occasional spark, but no show stopping consistent performances happening.

I thought Acre's game yesterday was outstanding. It makes me wonder why the guys in charge at Freo didn't value his attributes. Afterall, he's taken a long time to finally fine tune these attributes, so then we just allow him to walk to Carlton... the mind boggles.

Naah. Why would we want a guy who runs all day, is strong one-on-one, breaks tackles, and delivers the ball well*? We don't need that. Just like we don't need some sort of big dude who provides the get-out-of-jail-free option on the wing when kicking out of defence (Tabs, not Acres).

If Bell and the team have any sort of mission from here on in, it is to keep good players. For too long we've been the place players come to fade away, or to rejuvenate their careers before returning to Victoria, or to learn the trade and build their value before heading east.

*OK, I made that bit up.

With the salary cap one of the worst things you can do with a developing list is overpay too many players. I think Bell was sensibly trying to avoid that error, but as he often does he’s overplayed his hand.

Any one of the departures is completely defensible. In the aggregate it was too much talent walking out the door.

Personally, I would have assumed one of our young guys could have stepped up but none have.

Pav copped some stick for saying we were getting out worked. I don’t think we are lacking effort necessarily, but I do think we have less running power in our side than most. Guys like Acres and Tucker would have helped in that regard.

Remember that time when some bloke, Anthony I think his name was, came to Freo to fade away and kicked 70 goals in his first year?

I'd take that from anyone these days.

Acres inconsistency, and seeming dislike of getting his hands (Guernsey and shorts) dirty cost him his spot in Freo. For an imposing physical specimen he spent a lot of time on the outside and rarely did any heavy lifting. Take his season appraisal at the end of the season, not after 1 good game.

Well his averages in all areas are up against last year so it's not one game. His role is an outside midfielder, just like most wingmen, so he's obviously doing it well. And as mentioned he's getting more disposals on his own than our wigmen combined.
Can you think of any wingmen who play an inside mid role?

That was certainly a knock on Acres that he didn’t play as big as he looked, but if he’s a winger then he should be graded against other wingers. If he only sticks half his tackles, overhead marks and contested ball wins, that’s still twice as much as guys like Landon or Hill who are elite wingmen.

He’s averaging 26 touches and nearly 500m gained a game. That would put him top 2 in both categories for Freo.

We’re missing him heaps. I’m guessing Bell thought someone would step into the role to replace him but he’s got that call horribly wrong at this stage. NOD is coming off an injury but looks a shell of the player from last year, Henry has improved from useless to unproductive, and Hughes and Aish just don’t have enough go.

Are you saying that Acre’s wasn’t physical enough? If that was his biggest knock, who at Freo thought we’d be better off by replacing him with Henry? He may have some potential but physicality won’t be his prime attribute!

WTB, I think people wanted him to be Nat Fyfe because he was almost as big. He also wasn’t Stephen Hill.

The real issue was he could slow the play up a little when used an an outlet. What I’ve learned this season is it’s much worse to have no outlet at all.

He ran up and down an oval all afternoon, and while that doesn’t seem like a really important thing, in today’s footy you just need a few guys like that and we don’t have enough. As good as guys like Switta and Schulz are, they can’t substitute for a guy who runs hard and gets 20-25 touches a game.

Freo needed to make the Sharp trade not the O'meara one.
