Remember the Johnno and Pav incidents? Yeah, I know it was a while ago now, but I do remember that the tribunal handed down 4 week and 6 week penalties because they wanted to crack down on head high contact. Within a couple of weeks, and the reporting of a couple of "favoured players" the tribunal went back on its word. Why?

I think if you pressed him, Dr Alan Pearce's opinion would be that football shouldn't be played. That's probably a very sensible take on things, but it's more extreme than most people are prepared to accept, so what we are doing is deciding on what is an acceptable level of entertainment-induced brain damage.

Heavy bumps have dramatically reduced since the AFL started addressing the problem. Over the year, you are probably looking at only a handful of deliberate bumps that cause more than the level of brain damage we tolerate from other incidents. Those are mostly illegal and the player is punished.

Banning what is currently a legal bump isn't going to be the fix you think it is. Most of the concussions come from collisions, where no one is at fault. It's just going to frustrate players and supporters when someone shoves someone into te ground and they get put out for 3 weeks.

Probably my use of the word elimination. Just meant in the bumping context. It will reduce concussion numbers so let's do it.

A knee in the back of the head, deliberate or not, has similar potential to cause injury to the brain. The sling tackle is an example of another action which can cause serious injury which they’ve jumped on trying to lessen serious injury.

Accidents will happen, but the message has to be given that any actions considered deliberate which cause an injury to the head will be dealt with harshly. Some players almost seem to deliberately use the knee when jumping into a pack, take note Jack.

This is where we are today. Don't do something really obvious that will make a partial difference cause it won't fully solve the problem.

Can't it just be continual progress towards a safer game, through changing attitudes? It's worked so far.

If it's worked so far, why is there a class action being brought against the AFL by ex-players?

ex-players would indicate players from a point in time earlier than now.

I would put it you that there's some ex-players in this class action that have left the game within the past two years and that the AFL/game is not moving as fast as the change in attitudes and expectations.

From a modern health and safety perspective the AFL has an obligation to reduce the risk to as low as reasonably practicable. My understanding is that these risks have been known and understood internally for some decades now, although I'm sure that will be contended should it ever get to court. I'm not sure I buy the slowly slowly argument as acceptable when some relatively minor changes a decade ago could have prevented some of these newer cases from ever occurring.

To the ones who are advocating getting rid of the bump can I ask how you would have adjudicated the Cameron v Acres contest?
Cameron came out worse for wear, but both players in the act of trying to get the ball bumped into each other really hard.
If the answer is play on then what's your point exactly?
