TOPIC: Poor Coaching or Players Not Following Instruction

It was more than frustrating to see us playing a half strength team not expected to make the eight and let them dictate the game.
As mentioned by a person at the ground, there was very little movement in our forward line, but then again, we held the ball up for so long, chipping it around for meaningless possessions and getting nowhere, before turning it over, that by this time there was no room in the forward fifty for them to lead anyway.
You only had to watch other games to realise the way to go was to take the game and the opposition on. Run at them in at least pairs, creating options that can't be covered by a near stationary opponent.
We've recruited players with pace, but we rarely see it used.
Is it the players, the coach or both?

What is frustrating we seem to be the only team that plays this chipping football, the others move on quickly

You'd be hearing the same wailing and gnashing of teeth at Brisbane and Geelong right now.

I recon this is going to be tricky year to pick, week by week. We were definitely outscrabbled in the contest throughout, and the Saints gave themselves more clear looks at the sticks than we did, and it shows on the scoreboard.

If you want to say Roly handed one to JLo ,no arguments about it. If you think the tall forwards drew a blank, no doubt about it.

As to whether this was a dagger to the heart of our our prospects for the season though, can't buy that. Could be the jump start for the guys to show what they are really made of. Life is very long, and so's the footy season.

I'd go ballistic on the midfield this week to do one thing - move the decimal point.

As soon as the back handpass from the scrappy packs becomes 5 to 7 metres instead of 0.5 to 0.7 (or a flop to the shins of the receiver) we clear the congestion, move it before the flood Rolys in and we are away and scoring.

Almost as if we need to develop some outside mids to offset the plethora of insides.

Poor Coaching or Players Not Following Instruction?
Aren’t the coaches responsible for addressing both?

I'm normally fine after a loss but I am bitterly disappointed about this one. When teams lose, angry supporters call their players soft. It's just a thing to say. Make no mistake we had a few on the day who were soft, because they were soft.

This chip kicking and indecision is an outcome of Lyon throwing his numbers back. Longmuir values skills, possession, and hitting targets. So do we, but you are not going to get the perfect option playing Lyon coached teams. You have to take the game on. And we didn't.

The kicking into the forward line seemed not recognise that they were outnumbering us. One blocks the Freo player the other takes the rebound mark. Don't kick it directly to anyone. Get a ground ball, or a stoppage - evening up the numbers. It was just perfection being the enemy of good.

Aish, Taberner, Darcy, Jackson and O'Meara were pathetic at times. Very disappointing.

Trade him for that Caminiti bloke.

Or maybe listen to the other Hyoen who said something like "think a change of method and a bit of hardness is required more than wholesale changes. Forget the forward line personnel talk."

If Longmuir values skills, he's done a great job of hiding it from the players and supporters.

It was numbingly single-minded footy. The way to win this thing these days is adaptability. The kind of adaptability we saw in an elimination final September 2022. Doing bad. Stop doing bad. Start doing good. Do good in a few different and unpredictable ways. Win.

Adapting by going slowly in a different direction is not adapting. It's just going slowly. Lazy and cautious footy kicks you 7 goals. Name one person who wants this?

Poor coaching or not following instructions?

Longmuir values possession and skill. If you have skill and a bit of bravery to take the risks you need then you'll be fine. Always thought Lyon's method worked against soft, unskilled, inexperienced teams.

And I don't think we are any of those things. Anyway, Saturday night. Be there!

Mushy, is the answer Peter V'landys?

I said in another post last week that I think our record against good sides will be a positive this year, but that the games I’m worried about is when a mediocre team sets out to stonewall us because we struggle to unlock scoring against those teams. That’s exactly how it played out on Sunday.

It was a classic Lyon game plan. Gum up the other team’s forward line, then break quickly the other way into space. Whereas our haphazard forward delivery landed in a group of 30 players, St Kilda’s haphazard forward delivery landed mostly in the hands of Brennan Cox, except for the odd one that squirted out and bounced into space where the Saints could pounce.

The way to beat that game style is to move the ball quickly, or to get the ball into the hands of players who can pinpoint passes into a crowded 50 or kick it over their heads. We did neither. Experienced teams can find a way to do that, but we’re still pretty immature in that regard.

Tabs was irrelevant, Fyfe was poor, and Jackson had an almost game. We only needed to kick a goal or two more in the middle of the game, and the Saints would have been forced to take the game on, and we would have rolled them by 6 goals.

I think we’ll look a lot better against really bad teams or good teams actually trying to win the game.
