Don’t understand the criticism of Henry. He was one of the few that tried to create.
Midfield was absolutely towelled up. Serong did nothing. Jaeger looked slow. Jackson failed to impress despite all the hype. Will Brodie no impact.
Treacy is supposed to be a wrecking ball, a couple of balls came in high to the goal square, between him, Tabs, Jackson and Darcy not one created a contest.
Shultz and Frederick were invisible. Fyfe was really bad. If the answer is to put him back in the centre for the next 12 years we are cooked.
The back six racked it up. If Ryan, Young, Cox, Clark, Wilson and Chapman get 177 possessions, and this results in 52 points something is sadly wrong with our method.
Even if we are getting towelled up in the midfield this amount of footy has to result in metres gained.
We lacked intensity all day. How many times did we kick it to a contest only have Saints players arrive first and sweep it away? Reeked of a playing group that has got way ahead of itself and is pretty happy with themselves. They showed little respect to their opponents and the coaching staff let them coast along. It’s almost like all day they assumed they would win

St Kilda to win 8 or 9 in a row, only to lose their remaining games after leading at half time.

We need some speed on the wings. Our midfield are solid players, but not exactly rockets. Our backline is brilliant, but apart from Walker and Clarke, and to a lesser extent Willo, aren't run and carry line-breakers. Could we play Clarke and O'Driscoll on the wings next week pls? A lot of people knock Walker, and he turns the ball over now and then, but he speeds up the transitions. We knew what a Lyon team was going to do, but we played a slow game with slow players, allowing the Saints to set-up and dictate play.

They played switchback footy - back and forth, back inside/outside, then find Sinclair in the middle. It effectively out positioned two of our players then used the space all day. We looked lethargic and desperately need someone with the footy smarts (like Mikey).

Switkowski sums it up for all of us

“Disappointed to lose in a predictable way.”

Been here before. Not as bad as it seems. Sometimes a loss is good for a team who thinks they are better than they are. Living in fishbowl Perth with the media fawning over the better WA team non stop it’s easy for the young tackers to get ahead of themselves. Last years rd 2 loss to st Kilda was followed by a round 3 derby smashing of the eagles. Cop it on the chin, learn, move forward and come out breathing fire next week against north.

“Shultz and Frederick were invisible” WHAT???
DBTS I think you need to watch it again (endure it..) those two were working their butts off.
Esp Shultz. Those little blue boots were everywhere. Love his work rate and endeavour.
Brayshaw was the only other plus imo.

Agree, was at the game and freddie and schultz were the only forwards moving and giving options… fyfe is a mid.. not a forward. He has to come off the interchange as a mid rotation for brodie.. let him do what he does. Amiss in for Treacy. Walker in for Wilson.. he goes sideways too much

Fyfe can play as a forward, a half forward. He needs to be up on the 50 not deep. A James Hird/Brereton type role. Or look at how Gunston was used in his best years at Hawthorn. Give him room to expose those who block and hold him.

As Jlo said, it was the ground ball that killed us. When we are on song, I watch the scrappy bits of play with the ball being fought over at close range and expect us to come out with it. When I don't see that, I expect us to struggle. St Kilda did that stuff very well.

But as for playing against Ross Lyon, surely we all remember how teams used to beat us, back in 2015 when we were going ok? They'd chip it short to a leading player and inch their way up the ground until they were in a dangerous spot, and then have a go. Boring, but effective. On the other hand, when Ross was coaching us we liked nothing better than teams trying to rush the ball up the ground. Our structures meant they'd run into a brick wall.

Chipping it slowly up the ground was precisely what failed on Sunday. And will also fail against much better teams.

Essendon, Port & Collingwood each scored 125 points, the latter two against very good opposition.

Does anyone think they scored 73 more points than Freo by chipping it around? This isn't bloody soccer.
