I'm tuning into a sports channel on pay TV and literally one in five adds is for a gambling company.

They just don't stop, what's been tacked onto the back of them is and I don't know if they are a condition of the add or something separate, but the message has moved moved beyond setting a deposit limit to, you'll always lose gambling and think about what you could have purchased.

Great.

But if that's what is necessary and decent to do. What's the solution here?

For a start, wear a body shirt, pair of flares and platform shoes, get your hair permed, get your pay in a sealed envelope that you have to open and count, have all your correspondence and bills sent to a post box and only use a phone for making and receiving calls.

People need to put pressure on their football clubs and the AFL and make it untenable to allow them to sponsor the game Players need to be vocal, administrators need to be ethical and the AFL needs to rid itself of the spending habits that leave it in total reliance on gambling revenue.

It reminded me of the Alpine cigarette add, featuring a beautiful young couple on a yacht having the time of their lives smoking menthol cigarettes.

The add concludes with, a warning that smoking "will kill you". It's at that level now with gambling. If you need messages like this at the conclusion of an add, don't run it.

$80k fine FFS!! That’s just the cost of a long lunch for their exec team, it’ll have r impact.

I’m please to see that some clubs have moved away from pokies (although others like Carlton still derive significant income from those blood sucking machines), however, exploiting the vulnerable to make money for the wealthy is just an appalling blight on the AFL and many other sports. Especially sickening is the insistence by institutions that benefit from gambling ads (eg SEN) that it’s all ok because it’s not illegal and people have a choice. Legal and ethical don’t cross over in Venn diagrams when money making is involved.

The unfortunate thing is that wagering is the prime reason many filthy, rich sport leagues exist now.

Just think of the Indian Premier League. Liv golf. Most soccer "competitions". The US staples of NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball are *ahem* all-in. Don't start me questioning the reason for horses and greyhounds.

The opposition is building at a slow burn but I don't think it will ever drown out the support noise from the crowd - predominantly testosterone packed.

The fact that young fellas can be attracted to willingly and systematically burn money by giving it to an anagram of broke lads just epitomises the irony of this caper.

Gambling ads are a scourge, what's frustrating is that EVERYONE knows that the reason the league doesn't want to get involved is because those ads are what is fuelling record media rights deals, but they don't just come out and be open about it, instead pretending that it's all fine.

If you remove the vice promotion, then either the pot gets a little smaller, or you move further towards a subscription only model. It's a tricky scenario, one I'm sure Gill would rather leave to his successor.
