I've been reading all the reasons why the pundits in the Melbourne footy media have Freo finishing between 7th and 12th this season, in defiance of the laws of mathematics (i.e.what is "x" in this sequence - 7, 10, 14.5, x?).
One of the reasons given for Freo's mysterious decline (apart from Lobb suddenly becoming today's Paul Salmon) is the "horror" draw the AFL have inflicted on us in 2023, with two games against Geelong, Brisbane, Sydney, West Coast and Hawthorn.
Much to my surprise, and no doubt theirs, this is our performance against the Frightening Five in 2022: Six games, Five wins, One loss.

They're our bunnies.

I love your blind optimism Zorro, unfortunately "the laws of mathematics " also include parabolas.

Every team in the comp probably thinks they have improved on last season (even WCE hahaha), we wont really know if they have or by how much for a few weeks yet.

If Andrew Gaff is as fit as they say then we shouldn't take them lightly.

(Nup. Can't do it without laughing.)

So, come season end, we’ll be well versed in how Gee, Bris and Syd play.
All touted to be there come September, I see that as an advantage.
Avoiding these teams will not help the end cause.
These are the teams we’ll need to beat at the pointy end so bring it on!

Looking at our draw I see at least 6-7 wins at home and about 6 wins away. This would put us into the bottom half of the top 8. Here are the home games some of which (say 2 or 3) we need to win to get into the top 6 and probably into the top 4:
Geelong
Richmond
Carlton
Sydney
Brisbane.
If we win 2 or 3 of these we finish with about 14-16 wins. That's guarantees.top 4/top 6. Of course, there is always the possibility of an upset win or two away.
Any so-called pundit who writes off Freo not making the top 8 is talking through his/her backside.

Freo finished with 15 wins + 1 draw last year and didn't finish top 4.

To make the GF if you're a WA team, finishing top 4 only gives a GF possibility if you can win an away Qualifying Final to get a Home Prelim. Otherwise it's too hard. While finishing outside the top 4 it is impossible.

A top 2 finish is required, it's how the mob up the road have made most of their GF's. If people don't think Freo are one of the best 2 teams in it, you might need to reset your expectations.

Time will tell of course, we are all full of optimism at this point in time. Why not us?

"The laws of mathematics " in predictions in the 2023 season are X x 227,600 km2 x 6.6km2 x 10 x 1
The X is the 8 teams outside Victoria, x the area of Victoria, x the Mebourne CBD area, x the amount of Victorian teams, x one home ground advantage for a grand final.
This gives you the prediction that Victorian clubs should win every year.

The other reason being touted for our fall down the ladder is the feedback from the players leaving the club. Quite a few commentators publicly wondering (or maybe think they know) if there is something underlying which could impact on our performance this year.

I'm pretty bullish, but then again, this makes 29 years of bullishness, if I was your financial advisor you'd be spending your retirement living in hole in waste dump, luxury!

A hole after retirement? LUXURY - all I could manage was a small plastic bag on the edge of a puddle!

Zorro and Biz are right - we'll end up on top.

Our backline should be very good, our midfield should be very good, it all comes down to how our forward line functions.

We were never able to make a forward line constructed around Tabs and Lobb work. If you replace Lobb and Logue with Fyfe/Treacey and Jackson/Hodor I’m not 100% what happens, but there’s a lot more footy nous in the replacements, and I think that’s what has been lacking with our big forwards.

Jlo just needs to loosen the reigns a little. Coaches hate giving up goals, sometimes it feels more than they enjoy their teams kicking them. Our backline is good enough to be set a task of being stung on the rebound, and we need more crazy/brave attack in our footy.

If we play that way, we’ll finish top 4. If we revert to the slow kick to the bigs, then 5th to 10th is probably the range.

But on the question of the draw, I actually think our record against good sides will be a positive this year. The games I’m worried about is when a mediocre team sets out to stonewall us. We need to find a way to unlock goals in those games, and that’s where we struggle.

Just quoting myself from a day or two ago.
Well today Michael Barlow's backside is speaking loud and clear!
