TOPIC: Australian of the Year

hypen Australian of the Year 1 year 2 months ago #1

Why is the award now exclusively the domain of people who can promote important social issues? Critical issues on: race, treatment of women etc.

So it's great. But I do recall a time where Surgeons, Scientists and those who contributed to the Arts in a significant way would also from time to time get the nod.

Can't recall the last though.

I assume Lidia Thorpe was their first choice and she turned it down

I don't want to sound bitter, but I've put on far more weight than that lady over the years.

Sure, it's becoming more about awarding someone a platform to address the country than it is an accolade for high achievement now but, did you consider that this way might save some lives versus the old system of just giving some rich white dude a little trophy.

It’s a bit like politics, you win 32.6% of the primary vote and shaboom you’re calling the shots.

I did like the advice of the winner, kiddies choose your social media carefully. I’m at the checkout looking around thinking…..choose your weekly shop carefully.

On the plus side (oops, bad choice of words there), no one is going to boo that winner out of the 'love-yer-body' game are they.

Maybe the Australian of the Year should be reserved for those who need a platform to promote important causes.

“Surgeons, Scientists and those who contributed to the Arts” get plenty of alternative acknowledgments with awards like Order of Australia etc. and, sadly, others get the same gongs for simply doing their jobs, being rich or knowing the right politicians (or being politicians).

Firstly congrats to Taryn. Secondly, a warning to Hypen - stay away from trying to write her last name.
Thirdly, Shane will be Australian of the year 2024 as he has the platform with the new "You Boofhead" Button!

As someone who's seen the ravages of anorexia up close and personal, I've nothing against Taryn winning the gong. But…

…Dave Mundy.

I'll leave it there.

Hypen getting all nostalgic for that golden era of 2017 to 2020. Seems like a generation ago now, doesn't it?

I think this years winner is correct.
After reading her book I look in the mirror and think shes right.
Love you and live what you have been dealt even if you need to get a larger mirror.

I know Shane has mentioned Hypen's Law before, but I genuinely can't tell when Hypen is trolling any more.
