TOPIC: Oh, the outrage.

Walter the baker Oh, the outrage. 1 year 4 months ago #1

Walter the baker
It’s been interesting to hear the outrage that has been aired following the decision to hold the next three soccer grand finals in Sydney rather than the highest finishing teams home ground. Victorian media outlets have been full of commentary about it. Strangely very little of the Victorian sports community’s commentary has criticised the AFL’s 5,000 year commitment to the MCG for its GF.

While I’m not in favour of GF’s locations being undecided until a week before the game (as it creates too many logistical problems for travelling fans), I would love to see the GF being rotated around the country on a pro rata basis of number of clubs in each state e.g. WA gets 2 GFs every 18yrs. It’ll never happen in my lifetime but maybe one day in the distant future….

Quasi, if they hold it there in successive years, you could move to Adelaide for the year and save on airfares.

A year in Adelaide!

Shudder.

Be fair. Adelaide is very nice and there are a lot of things to see and do.

I mean, sure, the other 364 days would probably be pretty boring but that first day would be quite pleasant.

You could go to a different church everyday, Quasi, and then off to lunch to celebrate the day with a bottle of Southwark.

Easy way to solve the issue in the AFL, top seed gets a home GF. Extend the Victorian 300-year contract by an extra year if and when it happens.

You can't tell me that each state couldn't be advised 3 months out from GF Day that their venue may be used should they get through as the top seed. God we've seen Optus booked a year in advance.

44 gallon drums are pretty pricey in Adelaide. Make sure you stock up before you leave.

Simple solution:
Year 1 - Brisbane GF
Year 2 - MCG
Year 3 - Sydney GF
Year 4 - MCG
Year 5 - Adelaide GF
Year 6 - MCG
Year 7 - Perth GF
Year 8 - MCG
Then repeat until MCG contract runs out.

I’m now travelling to Adelaide once every 8 years. You’ve made it worse Colonel.

C'mon Shane.
You as well as anyone knows that if there are no problems to solve - you create a one then solve it - makes your CV look good.

I used to be a traditionalist who had no issue with the GF being held in the largest stadium in the (self-proclaimed) sporting capital of Australia. But my mind's been changed. I believe the GF should rotate around the country.

There are so many inequitable things about the AFL competition, from fixturing and scheduling to the constant rule changes (e.g. the Western Bulldogs benefit from securing NGA Ugle-Hagan at pick 1, but Freo can't get Motlop on the 30s). Abandoning the MCG GF contract can be one small start to evening up a lopsided competition.
