I’m not fussed about Freo starting on the road, and it doesn’t sound like there was much choice. Even without the concert, the Optus Stadium deck is pretty hard to start the season. Another week to soften up isn’t the worst, and it’s probably good to spread the travel out over the longest possible time. The AFL wants to draw the biggest crowds in Round 1, which makes sense, given there’s only about 3 weeks of decent weather in Melbourne for all of football season.

One thing that really bothers me about the scheduling is that there isn’t a single blockbuster/stand-alone game on the calendar that involves a non-Victorian team:
Season Opener, Easter Games, (Victorian) Queen’s Birthday, ANZAC Day/Eve, Dreamtime, wall-to-wall Victorian teams. I understand wanting to maximise crowds, but the AFL allowing Victorian clubs to monopolise what should be national events and marquee games is appalling.

They also say it's on Fox.
Has the new TV agreement kicked in yet or do we still get live free-to-air for WA based teams?

King has done a shoulder at training, will need a reconstruction and not be available for round 1 grudge match of the century.

With all Victorian Clubs playing in the Melbourne CBD round one for the second year in a row means Victorian people will demand it a Victorian tradition and it will super glued into AFL bias calendar.
The MAGIC ROUND is just the AFL trying to get you thinking they are giving something to the other AFL states as they have all the Perks Rounds including the Grand Final until...forever.

This says it all...

“While Hawthorn who won eight games last year, they traded everyone and are essentially going to go backwards. They play Essendon who haven’t won a final in 18 years at the MCG in a marquee slot."

Here's the laugh line of the year so far, from The Age"

"The Dogs will be disappointed to have lost the public holiday game (they've been shunted from the Easter fixture by Big Swinging Richie Carlton); smaller clubs have trouble securing a regular marquee fixture from the league.

Smaller clubs? What, smaller clubs like Sydney, Adelaide, West Coast, Brisbane, Port and Freo, none of whom have "regular marquee fixtures"? Or "smaller" venues like, Optus, the SCG and Adelaide Oval in "smaller" cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide?

I guess the further you are from the corner of Swanson and Collins, the smaller you appear. Unless, of course, you also factor in the curvature of the earth, in which case you disappear entirely.

The corner of Johnson and Smith St Fitzroy is the place to be. Look one way and you get Collingwood, the other you get Carlton. It’s where the AFL decide their fixtures.

Geelong will get a huge bonus in fixtures and finals because their new stadium in the future. Just don't expect the Carlton's and Collingwood's to travel down there.
