Checked my account this morning and my monthly payment came out as per the 10 month payment plan which I've had in place for a few years now. Not sure what all the excitement is about.

I had no payment plan, never gave them any sort of indication I wanted to be a member next year and never gave them permission to charge me. They took my money.

I'm always a big fan of the "This did not affect me so I'm not sure what the problem is" comments.

Bizkit, it might not make you feel better in your specific circumstances, but I think the subscription / roll over model suits most people. Almost everything operates on a subscription model these days. The phone doesn’t switch off once you go past your plan, it rolls over. So do utilities, online and TV subscription services, and most leases. The reason being a combination of companies happy to keep taking money, and most people not wanting their services to come to a screeching halt because they have failed to action an email or bill.

In the case of Freo members, I reckon the vast majority would just roll over from season to season. Personally, I’d hate to have to action my membership every year. There’s a good chance I’d forget, and then shirty if they sold my seat to someone else.

As to deluge of emails, next time you get an email from the club scroll to the bottom, and there should be a link to ‘Update subscription preferences’. If you click this, then you can decide what types of emails you receive from the club. You could, for example, de-select everything except ‘Membership and Ticketing’ and that way you’ll know if you get an email from the club it’s reasonably useful. I’d suggest at the very least deselecting the club/AFL/partner offers.

But more to the point, surely you’re not thinking of going to fewer games this year than last. Why would you want to miss out of our first premiership season?

I'm well versed on how to use email Morgan but thanks for the tips.

The difference being, I elected to enter subscription type deals in those situations. I never elected or indicated in any way that I would be doing so for a freo membership. Then there's also the fact there are many different types of memberships and that the season is months away with fixtures still unreleased and I won't have any idea what games I will be capable of attending let alone if I want finals upgrades or other additional aspects.

I would assume your household go food shopping each week? Would you like the local supermarket maintaining your credit card details and charging you the same payment you made the previous week in the expectation you would be shopping there again in the next? What if they charged you more with the expectation of inflation? What if they charged you months out from when you actually received any sort of benefit or service for your payment? It's a pretty straight forward concept to receive confirmation to charge a person.

What if I were in a coma, overseas without internet access, dead or somehow unable to read my emails (such as receiving so many rubbish ones, you stop even looking at them) and had no intention of spending any money on a Freo membership? They just go ahead and keep taking my money without any sort of communication from the person whose money they are taking. That's stealing.

I tend to have a busy time over most weekends with my own sport and social life so I'm not able to make every game. I also tend to have mates with access to box seats most games or even dockerland posters who've had spare tickets and were keen for a beer (if you haven't been to a match with Polly, you're missing out). I don't need a full season membership and can buy tickets to most games on the day if I'm free. Last season I wanted to guarantee finals tickets so bought a membership for some games but I haven't decided what I will do in the coming year.

What I do know is I want my money back and there's NO REASON for the club to steal it from my account without my knowledge.

Tragic Membership Fees - lump sum?? 1 year 5 months ago #23

I use auto renewal and see benefits to it.
An example of what I think is a good "auto-renewal" is how Kasperski do it.
Kasperski
"How does it work?

You place your order and your subscription is activated at the moment of purchase.
Before your subscription expires, we’ll notify you via email that your Auto-Renewal payment is due. So you’ll know the exact amount and payment date, plus any changes to the original price.
If you decide to proceed with Auto-Renewal, the upcoming fee is taken automatically using your original payment details. In case of payment problems – for example an expired bank card – we’ll send you a link to update your billing information.
You’ll receive an email confirming your renewal has been successful.
If you want to unsubscribe from Auto-Renewal, you can do so at any time. Instructions are attached to your order confirmation email.

How to turn off Auto-Renewal?

Follow the link attached to the renewal reminder or order confirmation email. After you cancel Auto-Renewal, you will receive an email confirming your choice.

If something goes wrong, please check the Customer Support page for information and contacts."

Is a very open process and no thought that I have been tricked into buying something I did not want.
It appears FFC has room for improvement

Don't get me started on Freo emails - but if you turn them off you'll rock up for a game and find The Wock and Anchor have been heaved into that great paper mache wasteland in the sky and your team are running out in a wannabe Carltoon jumper with chevrons.

Tragic, isn’t that the exact process Freo uses?

When people sign up, no matter the membership, it’s almost always part of a ‘payment plan’, even if it’s an annual payment. It was pretty clear when I signed up my son a couple of years back.

The payment plan terms and conditions specify that it is an auto-renewal process and you need to opt-out by 11 November each year.

The club sent an email – Bizkit’s chosen method of communication - one month in advance of the cut-off that said in the subject heading ‘Your membership is about to renew’, and gave instructions for how to opt out. There was a link in the email to the invoice so people know what they are up for.

Despite selecting email as his communication method, and controlling the number of club emails he receives, Bizkit missed the email.

That’s a reasonable process, and I would suggest a process that is most efficient for most people and the club.

Where it seems to have gone awry is that Freo either didn’t communicate clearly enough to Bizkit that he was on a payment plan, Bizkit didn’t pay enough attention to know he was on a payment plan, or Freo made an administrative error in placing Bizkit on a payment plan when he expressly opted out of the default process (it’s bound to happen processing 50,000 memberships).

Bizkit, what did the club say when you asked for your money back? They might charge you a $20 admin fee, but I very much doubt that 4 months out from the season they would keep your money against your will. If they return your money then it’s definitely not theft, it’s an administrative hassle. If you haven’t asked yet, then it seems a little premature to be equating the club’s standard membership process with a deliberate criminal offence.

Yep, I think you are correct Morgan. Like Bizkit, last year I was deciding which membership to purchase. At the time in Feb I was thinking the 3K membership... not sure what the benefits were now, but as I was offshore and for a couple months straight, I decided to wait until I got home and then just decided on a 6 game package.

Roll around Oct/Nov I did get an email from the club informing me that my membership would renew in November. I was surprised as I hadn't selected the package I'll want for 2023.

Anyway, I was able to email them back and discuss my situation, which was all positive.

So all good.

(I too get a daily truck load of emails streaming into my inbox like a news feed, but only elect to read the ones I need to. The others simply stay there hogging space.)

I don't want to speak for Bizkit but I would assume the reason he mentioned this was not because he wanted help troubleshooting the problem.
