TOPIC: Length of trade period

Apart from maximising media air time and column inches, is there any logical reason for the trade period to take as long as it does. I can’t see why the final outcomes couldn’t be achieved over a couple of days.

I’d love to see a papal election model used in the future. Lock all the list managers and player reps in an uncomfortable convention hall and they all stay there until the white smoke tells security to open the doors.

Is there any reason for it not to?

Compared to what? The time it takes for the AFL to get a review together for investigating wrong stuff? I'm thinking two weeks is about right!

Reasons to shorten? You’re sounding like you are in the media industry Shane.

WTB, would they send up green smoke when the eagles have completed their trading?

Do you think they're all just standing around in a cattle yard swapping bits of paper?

Trade period used to be a lot shorter and the result was complaints that the pressure to complete deals meant many players were shunted around with no time to consider their best interests or the ideal strategies for the clubs trying to build teams.

Your main problem stemming from the longer trade period is that it gives the media that pressure to perform and come up with something...

anything

to sell space. You could just ignore that and await the announcements of completed deals, it's not like there's any other role for a fan at any stage of proceedings anyway.

It's in the AFL's interest to keep the AFLPA happy by allowing for the maximum movement of players that clubs can tolerate. I agree it's tedious, but a running out of time probably shouldn't be the reason someone can't pursue their employment at a place of their choosing. There are already some significant restrictions on employment for AFL players that aren't easily resolved - ask Rory Lobb.

Let's not forget, Lobb agreed to his contract and negotiated to be at Freo for that period of time on big money before we start talking about restricting his movement. The contract was front loaded so it's a little less money at the end and now he wants out?

No one had a gun to his head when he signed the contract and started raking in the cash. Colin Young getting into the media and having a whinge because Lobb bought a $1.8M house in Melbourne during the year as he expected to head to Vic is so dumb and manipulative. If you were so worried, you'd organise a decent trade for him so Freo are even slightly tempted to consider a trade. So far, there has been ZERO offers made to Freo for Lobb either this or last year.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Thanks to those who provided sensible reasons for the need for a longer trade period. (I know, I shouldn’t expect sensible comments!)
My thinking was based on most teams having had a lot of time before the official trade week to informally sort out their situations (as was the case with players like Acres, Logue etc. . Some players have known since mid season where they are heading.
As tedious as it is, it’s still better than reading about cricket practice matches.

And, while in contract, he has nominated one club in Victoria to limit our options. In his defense he was very very good against them on their patch, they should be more motivated.
