By that same logic you can fair dinkum punch someone in the face during a marking contest. Actually, at least if you punched them you could 'claim' to be aiming for the ball. Unlike Cripps, who had his arm tucked in, making no attempt for the ball.

It was a marking contest. The ball was in the air. I tried to spoil it with a big right hook, and I followed up with a quick left uppercut just incase I missed the ball the first time. It's not my fault I collected old mates head with both fists. Hand on heart, your Honour, I didn't mean to send his teeth flying. It was a marking contest.
