Reality is setting in and freo are pretty much where they should be. Unless the whole team plays at a high level we are a middle of the pack outfit. Before the start of the season most would have been happy with a top 8 finish which is looking likely. The excitement of great wins over Geelong and Melbourne created a false hope and some got carried away.

Freo are building a great team but they are young and are slowing before our eyes. The backline is fantastic. The midfield needs another cog, Acres best season has stalled in the last few games. Henry will only get better but isn’t afl ready just yet. The forward line still struggles and Tabs has had too Many shockers of late. Lobb is either on or off, not particularly worried about losing him.

Main point is that so far most would have thought freo have outperformed on expectations from the start of the year. Realistically we were never going to win it this year, the real excitement is what this experience for the young players will do for next year and beyond.

Here’s a perspective, 9 goals, 7 goals, 5 goals in the last three games is nowhere near “where they should be”.

Three weeks ago sitting in equal top on the ladder. Most likely tomorrow sitting 7th with a form line of 10th and an adaptable method of 12-14th.

We have stopped doing the thing that lifted us up from last year. At the start of the year the players took risks and backed themselves to win contests.

They would do difficult things, go for a mark that they might not get instead of waiting back, take a shot for goal instead of looking for someone in a better spot, take the higher risk option instead of heading for the boundary.

The last few weeks the players have gone back to relying on the coach have given them a secret formula game plan. They don't try and win the game by winning a string of contests, they try and win by sticking to rules and structures.

Melbourne played like we were playing in the first half of the year. They weren't afraid of losing.

One of the reasons I think we are tiring is beacase if the pre-pre-season we did due to Covid
It gave us a great start to the year and now some of the dash has faded in comparison to the other contenders who’s experience at timing their run is now starting to show. Any finals games would be more valuable experience for the playing group, we seem to get swept up by the special events, like starlight and Friday night stage, maybe too much player involvement in the before game circus.

Perspective is to say that the team that gave us a hiding last night lost a preliminary final by a 100 points and won a flag 70 games of football later. Both on last nights ground.

I try not to get to bent out of shape over a game of football in my older days but that contest (lack of) left me flat. I saw a lot of players not go hard at the football. Everything seems to be turnover related. Its like we've flipped 180 degrees from Ross Lyon*.

*Its certainly not shallow analysis and making up a false narrative cause i am frustrated as hell.

Its been a long season for the young guys, and opposing sides have had a chance to work out how to play us. At the start of the season I said I wouldn't mind us losing, as long as we still went hard. And there were some mid-season games where we kept up the attacking football and stuck to our game plan with excellent results.

So Justin - point out to the players that there is no point to being "careful" now. We just need to get back to being dashing and daring again.

The performance for Peel by the following will be important for selection against the WB:
Hamling
Wilson
Erasmus
Treacy
O'Driscoll
Western
Tucker
Maybe also Meek?

Hamling and Pearce looks good down back. Play Cox forward. Keep Logue forward and bring in Wilson down back.
My team:
Ryan Hamling Wilson
Young Pearce Clark
Acres Brayshaw Aish
Schultz Cox Fredrick
Logue Lobb Western
Darcy Serong Brodie
Int: Tucker, Erasmus, Walker, Treacy.
Henry or O'Driscoll as medi-sub. Walters managed (as they say these days).

At Marvel and under the roof - our new dry home!? We win by 4pts!
