Whatever we decide to do I hope we’ve learnt from the Tim Kelly trade and we don’t pay overs for Jackson. We have a well balance team first culture that should be our focus.
I’m totally confused about how we should go after ready this article:

I hear what your sayin WTB but Lobb is on huge money and wanted to leave last season which is pretty disruptive for team members.
It’s a difficult gig signing and resigning players into a good side. Griffin is a must have resign with his talent.
Similarly Serong, Brayshaw and Chappy.... which makes me think that losing Lobb and gaining Jackson would have a benign affect on the current squad.
Here’s hoping

That article doesn't make a lot of sense and he clearly doesn't know the state of Freo's list. He says we don't need a ruckman and Jackson is only a ruckman so shouldn't prioritise Jackson. Then he goes on to highlight Lobb leaving and how athletically unique and special Jackson is that he doesn't play like a ruckman. The potential for the game changing (no more boundary throw ins) and that would be a bonus for Jackson to use his athleticism around the ground. It makes no sense, is Jackson a ruckman only or not?!

Then he mentions the clearly wrong figures used on a proposed Jackson contract claiming a realistic option of $600K which is probably unders for mine. This is already far less than what Lobb earns and for the best young tall in the competition who won a rising star, turned a GF and consistently shown he is going to be an absolute jet, Jackson is easily worth. Yet apparently we shouldn't be wasting our time?!

Then he mentioned getting Brayshaw (who is a free agent) which I'm all for and I'm sure the club has already placed an offer to him. But he says Brayshaw is of far more value to us and would get a starting inside mid gig so we should prioritise him. Um, have you missed our plethora of inside midfielders? We can't even get a two time brownlow medalist in there at the moment and we drafted a top 10 inside mid last year with another using our first pick of the second round. Brayshaw would be great for our side but he would have a similar mr fix it role across the side and is far less of a squad need than Jackson.

All of this is while completely writing off everything Jackson has achieved in his first couple of years as a young tall. It's almost unheard of that a ruckman/forward has even half the impact he has had so far in his career. Most wouldn't have even played a game in their first few seasons. I wouldn't take anything in that article seriously.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Agreed, that article makes no sense at all.

I'm even less keen on A. Brayshaw. Surely it would be better to get games into Erasmus and Johnson.

We don't have key forwards? Anyone heard of young guns Treacy & Amiss who can't even get a game at the moment. Well certainly not a Melbourne journalist who can't even point to Fremantle on a map. Jackson is only 11 months older than Treacy.

A straight swap of Jackson for Lobb + a pick seems like a fair trade to me. They would each be playing for the other's money.

As for Angus, sure he's a good player, which one of Andrew, Brodie & Serong is he supposed to replace, apart from Mundy? We also have a dual Brownlow medallist who tends to play well in the midfield.

Freo already have a premiership calibre side. Bringing Jackson in would only work if Lobb leaves, if that's the reason, so be it.

Even if Lobb leaves and we don't get Jackson, then Treacy plays FF and Taberner plays Forward/Ruck. Somehow Amiss has to get a game too!

I feel worried for Dave, I can see him being squeezed out Nathan Jones style if he plays on next season. I hope I'm wrong.

I like Jackson and I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that he and Hodor could form one of the greatest ever ruck combinations.

I think Niall is correct about Jackson’s value, but I can’t see Melbourne being satisfied with two late first round picks (our picks in 2022 and 2023). I personally think that Jackson and Hayden Young, both taken the same draft, are comparable talents. There is no way I would accept two picks in the 14-16 range for Young. Most (but not me) would have Jackson as more valuable than Young.

I suppose the best option might be something like trading both Lobb and Logue and hope you can get enough value from those trades to make it enticing to Melbourne; but I feel like Freo’s track record with drafting is better than with trading. I wouldn’t want to give up any of our young core, so if there’s any doubt, I think we should keep the picks and build what we have.

On Angus, I don't know where he plays for Freo, but there are 22 guys who run out every week, and I find it hard to believe that any team isn't better for Angus to be one of them. I think he's like James Aish that way.

Yeah, but we have James Aish already. Trade Aish for Angus then.

For a footballer to be truly great he has to have room to be great. There's not a lot of room for Luke Jackson. But that wont stop you having to pay a kings ransom for him.

Longmuir has a massive headache with Fyfe. He found another one whilst Fyfe was away.

We don't have to trade for Angus, he's a free agent. We can grab him for free to add to the best 22 which he would definitely fit in.

Biz, suggest you reread the article (based on your first post). Niall's main point is that Jackson hasn't proven himself as a forward and suspects he may never do so. Therefore, he's not a replacement for Lobb.

I suspect Jake Niall is a MFC member.
The club themselves spruiked to all and sundry after he was recruited that he had all the tools to become a power forward. Given hes only had 3 years in the system he would be tracking very well to dominate this role.

Lobb isn't a full time forward either so that wouldn't be a problem. I'd suggest Niall has little idea about players and their roles based on that article.

Additionally Jackson kicked 16 goals last season as a 19yo part time forward, that's huge and doesn't take into account all the times he set up goals and did fantastic things around the ground. Niall's expectations of what Jackson is or isn't are irrelevant.

If you polled posters on dockerland before this season started as to whether Lobb was a 'proven' forward then they'd probably come back with a no. Jackson was as proven as Lobb but is 10 years younger. Jackson gets more time on the ball and pushing up the ground from half forward than as someone who starts out of the square like Lobb.

And in any case, I don't want him as a permanent key forward and I don't think we desperately need one. We have Tabs with a few years left if his body holds, Logue showing plenty of promise along with Treacy and Amiss in the wings. We need a more mobile tall option who can relieve in the ruck and roam the ground. It doesn't need to be a direct Lobb replacement because there's probably 1 player in the comp who can replicate what he can do (Darcy Cameron FYI).
