This is what happens when you don’t fine cottrell for pushing Fyfe in the umpire, very next week Hipwood sees an opportunity to gain separation by pushing his opponent towards the ump,
How Hipwood gets sent to the tribunal while all the noise last week was about Fyfe and not Cottrell is a mystery to me.

Cottrell didn't push Fyfe into the umpire. He jostled Fyfe and Fyfe felt the texture of the umpire's shirt. It was a nonevent.

As is often the case with these things, the difficulty is proving intent.
Did Cottrell intend to push Fyfe into the umpire? The footage would suggest that he didn’t.
Did the Hipwood intend to push his opponent into the umpire? Who knows? The footage that I’ve seen is taken from another planet and is far from conclusive.
If it was intentional he’s in trouble. If he was simply pushing off and his opponent stumbled into the umpire it is a similar situation to Fyfe.
At the end of the day, how do you prove intent?

That also has its drawbacks if done in isolation to intent.
Player A intends to punch the ball but connects with an opponent’s chin and he’s out for the rest of the game and the following week.
Player B king hits an opponent’s chin and he’s out for the rest of the game and the following week.
Same penalty because the consequence is the same? I don’t think so.
Where possible, intent and consequence might both need to be considered.

Yeah i remember as a junior round-housing the ball; however, by the time I did the action the ball had past but the opponents head hadn't. I was subsequently sent off...
I'd give the WoodenHip 3 weeks regardless of intent.

The next week, the same Player A charges a different ump and causes him to spectacularly flip over the boundary and crash into the opposition cheer squad - the AwFL ignore the incident.
The next week, the MCG sells out and 90% of the little tackers are wearing Player A's jumper/number and the AwFL use highlights of his umpie bashing to spruik merchandise, game day attendance and sports betting agencies that take his collisions on a new betting line.

In one situation the umpire has a large football player knock him to the ground. In the other, nothing at all happened.

Intent should be taken right out of the equation.

If your stated policy is to ensure safety to whichever body part your current fetish involves, then safeguard it. As Shane said, it's about consequences... not what you say you meant to do when you accidentally did that Bad Thing.

I know the AwFL likes to tie itself in knots with faux High Court dramatics at the Tribunal and weasel out of acting by hiding behind definitions of intent but they could easily actually clean up a lot of dirty play by removing intent as an exonerating tool.

Punish the consequences. Get real.
