This game was all about the midfield contest, which we lost all day long. My daughter and I counted 27 stoppages including centre bounces and we won two, one of which Mundy then duffed his kick. Voss spoke of Carlton concentrating on their stoppage work and "shape" around the ball and too many times two or three of our midfielders would converge on the ball leaving Blue midfielders out wider, ready to run off. This week, we need to work on OUR shape.
Yes, I agree we should only really ever have one of Brodie, Mundy or Fyfe in the centre at any one time, unless its wet and slow.
JLo and Carr got done over just like our midfielders.
Trying to analyse any of the forwards including Colyer is a losers task given the lack of forward half entries. the back line similar, they were like the 300 Spartans.
What was baffling was why we allowed Carlton to waltz the ball out of their backline after behinds. We`ve been good at that most of the year but on Saturday just allowed space and we sat off in zones, why? Then JLo says he wasnt happy with our defensive 50 efforts - well thats his area to coach I would have thought.
One thing this match did highlight is that whilst we are a reasonably pacy side, our midfield isnt. It could be time to search for one more addition that has pace. Jordy Clark really caught my eye on Saturday. He is seriously quick off the mark and his close down speed is excellent. He is also an excellent long penetrative kick. Could he be an outside mid instead of using Aish at times? If not, consider him at least along the centreline somewhere. I think he is going to be some sort of player actually.
