TOPIC: Freo vs Bloos

Yesterday’s result seems to say that, after the bye, the 4th and 5th placed teams are pretty evenly matched. Both teams have won 10, lost 4. Freo score fewer points but concede less than Carlton. Let’s hope that, if we have to play them in an Elimination Final, it’s a Dockers home game…

NPK, you say that Fyfe has never been a highly skilled player, and if you are talking about kicking, nobody is going to argue with you. But his marking has been superb, and his handpass delivery has been sublime. So to be fair, he has some pretty good skills, which might explain a Brownlow or two.

RR and NPK, his field kicking has always been good too. Not sure if it's a good example, but he would have hit that umpire in the forward pocket on the chest from 50 m

roger rocks. I said apart from this clearance and aerial work which includes marking. His goal kicking is well below average, field kicking is about average, tackling below average, defensive work well below average. He is known as a contest beast but yesterday he looked like he has a long way to go. Hopefully he proves me wrong because what we were missing yesterday is exactly what he CAN provide

It looked to me like he hurt his shoulder in a 1st quarter tackle yeaterday...I'll have to go back ro the tape for the exact moment, but... it's got to be said, the midfield has not been what it was since he came back....he needs heaps of match conditioning, and he'a a champion, but, where can we play him to build that conditioning up, whilst not upsetting the midfield..??

Forward pocket.

That’s where I played in the North Innaloo under 12s.
I wasn’t accountable enough for a back pocket.

Definitely missed Switta, Walters and AA Acres. The back-line was immense.

The fumbling from the Hawthorne game continued for a few players, Mundy included unfortunately. Maybe that's partly what JL was referring to when he'd seen a few things over the last few games that need work. Skills?

One game I won't review. We lost the game at the selection table and structurally (plus a few players that looked underdone or sick - Luke Ryan was still carrying the effects of his illness). Logue does not fit into the backline with Pearce, Cox and Ryan. We missed him forward. Neither Serong nor Hughes are wingers, it would have been a good opportunity to move Jordan Clark into that position as he can run and defend. We really need a shut down forward as Saad and Docherty killed us. But one thing is for sure, we will fix those problems this week end. ps, some are too quick to rail against Fyfe and Mundy - very hasty judgment.

I’m not going to bag Mundy or Fyfe as they are both fantastic players. I am going to bag Carr though, way too many times we had those two plus Brodie at the centre bounce. I would argue we shouldn’t have Two of them together let alone all three. Way too slow when the blues got first possession (which also happened way too often)
Brayshaw and Serong should be our main two at Centre bounce downs with one of Mundy, Brodie or Fyfe.

If your name is Fyfe shouldn’t mean you have to play

This game was all about the midfield contest, which we lost all day long. My daughter and I counted 27 stoppages including centre bounces and we won two, one of which Mundy then duffed his kick. Voss spoke of Carlton concentrating on their stoppage work and "shape" around the ball and too many times two or three of our midfielders would converge on the ball leaving Blue midfielders out wider, ready to run off. This week, we need to work on OUR shape.
Yes, I agree we should only really ever have one of Brodie, Mundy or Fyfe in the centre at any one time, unless its wet and slow.
JLo and Carr got done over just like our midfielders.

Trying to analyse any of the forwards including Colyer is a losers task given the lack of forward half entries. the back line similar, they were like the 300 Spartans.

What was baffling was why we allowed Carlton to waltz the ball out of their backline after behinds. We`ve been good at that most of the year but on Saturday just allowed space and we sat off in zones, why? Then JLo says he wasnt happy with our defensive 50 efforts - well thats his area to coach I would have thought.

One thing this match did highlight is that whilst we are a reasonably pacy side, our midfield isnt. It could be time to search for one more addition that has pace. Jordy Clark really caught my eye on Saturday. He is seriously quick off the mark and his close down speed is excellent. He is also an excellent long penetrative kick. Could he be an outside mid instead of using Aish at times? If not, consider him at least along the centreline somewhere. I think he is going to be some sort of player actually.

Carlton aren't all that fast trough the midfield. Freo aren't all that slow. It all comes from, as you say Rhufus, midfield position.

The quickness out of a stoppage comes from having receivers in the right spot for the second handpass or kick that makes the ball move faster than the players.

And, truly, Freo were about three decent tackles on Walsh away from turning that midfield battle around. He cut a swathe through traffic by simply running in a straight line many times over. He's a fantastic player and I'd pay him $10.5 over 7 years to join Freo, but there was no tackling or stopping even close to 10 of the other 14 games in the packs.
