TOPIC: Woodside Petroleum

Woodside shareholders voted overwhelming (98%) to accept a share scrip offer to merge with BHP's petroleum division. Hypocritically, half of the shareholders went on to vote against approving Woodside's climate action plan stating they'd not done enough at the same AGM.

Post merge Woodside will be one of the largest fossil fuel suppliers in the world. Against UN and IAEA recommendation they are pursuing this Scarborough project off WA. Which will continue to supply LNG into 2030. For those of you who don't know the process to liquefy the gas it's very energy intensive. Generation of power for this process is not coming from thermal rocks I can tell you that...

The club has some thinking to do. I am no Greeny. Spent a working life on the mines but we are at the pointy end now on the need for energy transformation and I reckon we are going to have to start taking sides soon. So are Fremantle, is anyone else getting a little concerned about our main sponsor?

I could never desert my beloved boys in purple but as someone who is extremely concerned at the state of our planet I am more than a little worried about Woodside's continued contribution to degrading the environment.

I can't in good conscience wear any Dockers merch with Woodside on it. I would like to see the club take the opportunity of our recent good form and potential interest from new sponsors to distance itself from Woodside. I think they have a contract until 2023 but after that it's rightly going to look increasingly bad for the club to be associated with a fossil fuel giant who doesn't give a stuff about climate change. As well, some of the people most affected will be first nations peoples and it's not a good look given our club's proud history in this area.

I'm a Geophysicist and actually worked on the exploration vessel in 2020 that was due to image the Scarborough prospect; however, due to the price of oil at the time the contract was terminated.

In 2021 also worked off Port Hedland for Santos and we actually shutdown the job early due to the humpback whale migration.

For those of you who are unaware, there are a lot of environmental hoops to jump through before any exploration can begin. NOPSEMA have a strong strangle hold on oil companies and there are very strict guidelines once exploration begins.

Now, at the other end of all this it sounds like Hypen has it covered.

I am not an alarmist and believe the weight of numbers will keep oil companies etc in check. In the meantime, I am happy for Freo to have Woodside as a sponsor.

Woodside have been very loyal to Freo.
They chucked money in when nobody else would.
They have supported the club in tough times.

Expat, the two bodies I highlighted said don't proceed for reasons associated with the globe warming from the use of saleable product.

I understand the body you quoted covers off safety and environment as it relates to construction and operation of that plant.

Disappointed to hear you are ok with Woodside cause they need to get stringent environmental approvals from a regulatory body that's not addressing the global impact of what they are extracting and processing down stream. Feel like you did a bit of a Scomo on me.

We have to stop. And if there are no viable alternatives after we stop then we change our ways till there is.

Demo1, that's exactly what Channel Nine said about Benson and Hedges supporting the cricket.

No disrespect Expat, but the 'I make money from them so I'm ok with them' is a bit LNP as a perspective. Even odder is the belief that Woodside is somehow kept in line by regulations. From where I sit, it's our governments that are kept in line by fossil fuel corporations.

Where do you draw the line? What about Programmed? Programmed supply contractors to work for oil companies to extract these oil & gas products...

Who's to say Woodside's future business endeavours won't play a critical part in the inevitable shift of society to low-emission energy production? I'm pretty sure they know their business-as-usual ain't going to cut it for much longer and if they want to continue to exist, things are going to have to change. It's a tough one to call, but for the here and now you are probably right and they need to get the message from all angles. And heed it.

Any potential strong cred companies out there, the Freo membership would be right behind getting some green back on the guernsey.

As an aside, not only oil and gas companies but any now with their logos on the front and back (twice on the back as of 2022) of jumpers... if sponsors were smart, they could gain more brand exposure and respect the occasion by, ironically, requesting the removal of their logos from the jumpers for Sir Doug Nicholls round.

Climate change is a serious issue that keeps getting misused by those who just seek to draw cheap attention. Continued calls for us to drop Woodside as a sponsor comes into that category.
The problem is us as consumers, it is us as wanting quick and easy solutions and a society that does not want to deal with the significant structural changes and costs that a real move towards Net Zero entails. It is a multi faceted task that is way more complex than just mouthing "renewables". The best environmentalists that I have encountered are the engineers and operators within industry who have converted to emissions reductions and put their professionalism, skills and experience behind finding solutions.
Our club clearly set out its aims and goals in the plan revealed to to Members late last year. Industry can, and is, doing the same on climate change and social matters. Easy to mock, but better to support. It is not an overnight fix.
Note 1. I own some Woodside shares - my more green (but less practical) family members would like me to sell them.
Note 2. I enjoy Dockerland for its humour and community. And really wanted my first post to be a response to WTB's questioning of Jordan Clark (he can always question JC). But a retraction has ended my hope for a witty reply. It is a great person that can acknowledge their mistakes
