TOPIC: Jordan Clark

I’m interested in hearing opinions on Jordan Clark. I was really encouraged by his first few games but he seems to have tapered off. Given our depth, could he be due for a week off to refresh?

Nah, there`s more worthy scape goats in the side, Walker will have to bide his time.

He was one of our best against Geelong and got coaches votes. That's only a couple of weeks ago, so don't see that as tapering off.
And I don't think you could take anyone's performance into account too much last week, as you'd be battling to find more than a very few good players.

Just bear in mind that Clark as well as Brodie, Acres and Aish came into our side with limited game time at senior level. Coupled with a young squad it’s not surprising that we will get some inconsistent performances.

I think Clark has been great, I would love to see that boomer of a kick for goal a bit more. Still, wonderful addition to Freo.

Clark hasn't had less than 20 touches from half back in our last 5 games, where is the tapering off?!

Combine that with often having to play the lock down role on the opposition's best smalls and I have no idea where you're coming from. He's one of the best players we have at breaking the lines and moving the ball forward and has been a catalyst for how dangerous we are on the rebound with an impressive 82.5% disposal efficiency for the season (5th best at the club).

Clark had 20 touches and 6 tackles against GC which was amongst our better returns with 23 touches, 7 marks and a goal the week before. The week before that he had 24 touches and coaches votes vs Geelong. 22 touches and 9 marks were the stats against Carlton in the one before that. His recent form has been good so any disappointment you have in his performance is purely based on you.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yeah singling out Clark is a little odd indeed. David Mundy on the other hand.

I think to move things on democratically, escapegaoting should be conducted alphabetically from here on in. Sure, it means some players will cop it when they have a good game (nothing new) but that the notion that there are a few dozen handbrakes in the team be shared equally among the playing group across the season. This way winning and losing doesn't have to be factored in and we all have a bloody good whinge despite looking like a vastly (sideburns aside) improved club.
We have opinions - they have feelings.
Let's work together on this.

I thought we would use Clark more on the wing to add some dash forward of centre, but in the early part of the season Acres has been very good on the wing, and Switta has been fantastic as a high half forward. What I love about having Clark in the backline is that teams can’t easily lockdown on both Clark and Young, and in combination they are providing a lot of drive off half-back - as is Walker when he plays.

In my uninformed view, Young is the best of the three defensively, especially overhead. Clark can get a little lost defensively (I suspect that is why he wasn’t guaranteed a game for Geelong) and I think Walker has some work to do on the defensive side of his game. I still think that if there is a weakness to our backline, it’s that we’re missing a player who can really shut down a small forward.

All that said, we got Clark for an early-second round pick, and based on his start with Freo I think you’d do that trade 10 times out of 10.

I disagree Morgan, Walker is the best of the three defensively and someone we missed a lot last week when Ryan was playing on Rankine.

Walker has shut out the opposition's best small forward for the past few weeks before being dropped while looking classy with the ball in hand on the rebound. He's not as damaging as Young and Clark can be but that's more due to the quality of Young and Clark. Walker has the speed that young doesn't possess to keep up with opposition small forwards while being very good overhead as his impressive leap has allowed him to play on key position players last year when we were very short in defense.

We clearly have a log jam in defense because it's impossible to fit all of Cox, Pearce, Logue, Ryan, Chapman, Young, Clark and Walker into the one system so someone is going to have to move up to a wing eventually. Chappy is probably the front runner in the long term but I wouldn't mind seeing Young or Clark have a go there.
