TOPIC: The AFL state of the game

In an AFL article today on the state of the game it states “ Tackle counts have significantly dropped, going from an average of 59.9 per game in 2019 to 54.3 this season”, suggesting a more free flowing game? That’s marginally 1 less per quarter, around 10%, hardly significant.

If they want to really assess the state of the game from when it was watchable, how about publishing how often there are 36 players forward of the centre of the ground each game.

It's not significant, nor would it suggest a more free flowing game.

Tackle counts are down because the maggots with whistles are getting slack with their new found respect - direct correlation I would imagine.

About this time every year there are stories about how the game is more free-flowing, or tackle counts are down, or how high marks are back, or there are more goals, or there is less congestion and then you hit the dog days of winter with more wet weather or windy days, the coaches have learned to shut down any snazzy ball movement systems the other coaches cooked up over the summer, the games becomes a bit of a slog and then the same people spend their time worrying about how scoring has dropped off etc as a way to fill content until the finals roll around.

It’s the way of things.

Tackle counts have significantly dropped, going from an average of 59.9 per game in 2019 to 54.3 this season. Stoppages are also steadily declining, going from 87.9 per game to 86.1 over the last four seasons.

So some stats are compared over 1 season, and some over 4 seasons, when will they bring in the comparison of "how the use of the place kick has declined over the last one hudred years"???

Maybe everyone was a little healthier in 2019 and a bit fatter and slower.?
Either that or the Fremantle lads are so fast no one can catch them and it is messing with the stats in 2022!
