Very disappointing for him personally but also for the club. We're now one short on our list and as far as I know haven't had anyone eligible training with us. So I'm guessing we won't draft anyone until mid year if we want to?

It also harks back to our days of bad draft choices. Was he not a quite high pick in his year? We drafted him with an injury history, tried to change his running style and never managed to get him on the park.

We should still be able to pick someone up if we want to replace Valente but I'd say it's unlikely we'd use that position ahead of the midseason draft given we have some depth, albeit young.

Valente didn't have much of an injury history before being drafted, he just got unlucky with injuries and he couldn't get past them. It's a sad story.

Good luck to Luke in whatever he does next and thank you for your time with the club.

I thought I remembered him coming to us with an injury and missing a big chunk of his first season. In fact he only played 16 games for Peel in three seasons, 9 of those in 2021.

This is a snippet from his draft profile, which mentions a knee injury before being drafted.

Constantly discussed across the AFL industry Valente has been unfairly tarnished as too slow to impact at senior level. While Valente is not blessed with the blisteringly quick acceleration and speed that his SA teammates Izak Rankine and Connor Rozee possess, he certainly is not slow. Nevertheless, Valente has been tirelessly working on his athleticism with fast twitch training conducted before injuring his knee in the lead up AFL Draft Combine. He’s ability to run out games and getting across the ground with ease will be tested early into his senior career, as he continues to strengthen his running capacity.

that draft profile is a very sad read. he was obviously quite talented to be in top 30 discussions. It sounds like the industry tried to change him instead of play to his strengths which it sounds like were most things other than elite acceleration. could've been the next Mundy but we will never know because the system broke him before he got a chance.

Yeah he was injured in the last game or two of his draft year but hadn't been injured before then and the injuries that ended his career appear unrelated to that knee injury. I don't think it's accurate to claim he had an injury history or anything to worry about before being drafted as he played almost every game for his club and state for the previous few years before being drafted.
