I've just read in theWest... Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick says 17-game AFL regular season would be ‘incredibly exciting’

He discusses that the AFL should go back to playing each team once...

“I qualify that by saying I understand that’s going to create challenges, in the short term anyway, because of the broadcast deals that are in place based around 22 rounds. So to remove those five rounds is, I’d suggest, going to be expensive from a foregone revenue perspective.

“But I think there’d be opportunity in time, just because there’d be so much value on every game. Each game would seemingly be worth a heck of a lot more and I think in time it could create an even better product.”

Without those extra 5 games, I reckon the club's revenue will be down as well.
I don't really like the idea.
I'd rather see more AFL than less.
But if a 19th team comes into the competition, could we expand the top 8 who play finals to a top 10 or something like that to atleast push an extra 3 weeks of finals?

So at the moment if you play a team twice in the season , it's not worth as much or hold as much value?

I'm surprised the AwFL haven't worked out that if the 17 teams play each other 3 times then there is a weekend spare for the GF and start all over the following weekend.

I agree with Simon. Cricket is the prime case study. When there are just rolling Ashes series, rolling one day series, pointless 2 game T20 series that end in a 1 all result, or the longer Big Bash series, the games don't have any consequence because there is always another chance to win in a few days time.

Football isn't in danger of going that far but there's a lack of intensity in either end of the home and away season. There's always time to recover from a bad start, so the first few games aren't played with the fervour of later games. And as it gets to the last games or so, when you are at the top, you are just waiting it out for the finals. When you're at the bottom, you don't care anyway. It becomes a competition for the middle teams.

I think less games would bring a touch more finals like attitude towards each game. Instead of a loss being a learning experience, it becomes a damaging blow to you season.

The issue is they are doing stuff that runs contrary to the long term benefit of the game and society in order to meet players and football dept spend requirements. That's the first thing that needs to change and then you can easily address fixture saturation. Two ways to turn a profit, increase revenue and cost management. The latter just doesn't happen.

Kudos to Easten Wood calling out the AFL on gambling advertising, it's obscene. And so prevalent it's put me off gambling. And the bet responsibly caveat at the end is sickeningly disingenuous.

If you've got a growing market you don't reduce what that market offers, you increase it. Thats basic growth capitalism.

Until it exhausts itself and you are left with very little, that's growth capitalism and consumerism.

Football is not a product.

Yes it is, it's a hamburger - if you keep shrinking the size of a Big Mac punters will opt for a Whopper.

NBA is similar, too many games. I watch the season until about Christmas, and then on/off until finals around May/June. Teams on top tend to start resting stars when they've made finals, bottom teams start looking at the draft and the middle teams fight it out to make the play offs.

NFL has it about right. Teams don't even play each other during the season. They have some system where you have to play every team at least once every 4 years.
There are better ways to do it, but 22 games in an 18 team comp is probably less than ideal. Its another hang over from the VFL.

I think it works if you include a “rival” round as well where you play the team from your state twice, obviously the vic teams have to be paired up. That makes an 18 game season. If they added a Tassie and Northern Territory team you’d be back to a 20 round H&A season. make it a top 10 final series and the broadcasters would have nearly as many games.

You can make an argument either way. Major League Baseball has 162 in a season while the NFL has 17. Lots of factors influence the season length, not the least being the impact on the players (baseballers aren’t easily fatigued by physical impact), however, both are hugely successful commercial and cultural successes.

I’d rather see a focus on trying to equalise the draw (no easy task with the current structure of the competition) and letting that determine the season length.

It depends what you're trying to do. If the teams have owners then it makes sense to sell as many tickets as possible, which means lots of games. The AFL is a non profit organisation but they have given themselves a profit motive by tying everyone's wages to the earnings of the league.

Less games will mean less tickets and less advertising space, but it would increase the engagement with the competition. It would be better for the sport and make the league stronger but some people at the top might not get paid as much.

I like 17 regular season games, then 5 games against the other top 6 for finals series places.
Top 2 of middle 6 qualify for finals, bottom 6 against each other, 13th placed side get No.1 pick to to disincentivise tanking.
Two groups of 4 for the finals to keep the final fixture fresh
