TOPIC: Jesse Motlop

Good news about Tucker re-signing. Lets hope we have room for Crowden now too.
It got me thinking of Jesse Motlop.
If a club wants to take him before pick 40 - good luck!

I watched him closely in about 4 or 5 games this year and a few last year.
I have plenty of knocks on him.
One thing I saw really bothered me in the 2nd semi final vs Subi. It had me question his footy brain.
It was early in the game..He was playing FP but was the first defender in the middle of the ground after all players flooded back.
Subi had the ball coming out of the back half after a free/50 metre- I think it was Greg Clark.
Everyone else was in Subis forward half.
He ran straight at Clark at full speed from about 20 metres away.
Clark sidestepped him easily, then ran another 15 metres and kicked long to a Subi Forward who kicked a goal.
It was schoolboy stuff. He opened up space through the middle and didnt corell him.
I wonder if it has come all too easy for him.
He hardly touched the footy in a game of note this year.
If his name wasnt Motlop, he would be playing colts footy at best.
I may be wrong (hope I am) but I would pass unless he comes to us very very cheap..
Especially if it means we lose Crowden

Just to get this right - a 17 year old playing league in a WAFL GF made a schoolboy error?

I've seen seasoned players make stupid mistakes in a game, like missing the easiest of goals. And they've won two Brownlow medals.

I get your point Corporal but those two shots at goal you are talking about were not easy. That was a cyclonic gale blowing all directions that day. My memory is they were at least 35m to 40m out from goal. I walked across from the southbank area to the G and my sunnies flew off my head into the Yarra, the breeze was that stiff.
Good ones too.

I admit it doesnt help my argument that Smith? the Hawks winger, dobbed one from same position but 55m out later in the game.

There you go and thanks Rufus. I wasn't even thinking of the GF, but this year when he kicked 6.21.

He's close to 30 and one of the games greats, but still has deficiencies, yet some here a having a go at a 17 yr old for one incident in a game, when he was the youngest player on the ground.

How come they haven't gone through all the colts games to pick out similar things from our other recruiting targets. I know, because they haven't watched them.

And can they tell me how many other SF games they watched that Motlop played in? If he was this bad, why did they keep playing him in the league side and not colts?

He may make it or maybe not, but I'm dumbfounded that some have written him off already without ever seeing him play.

Here's some colts stats.

You have to cut Jesse some slack because he is only a lightweight kid playing against men like Greg Clark who have had another 7 years in the system. My biggest reservation in taking Jesse is that we already have Liam Henry another light weight kid who has struggled at times in the last 2 seasons against mature big bodied opponents. Do we need both. From what I've seen Liam has a lot of tricks in his repertoire which I think will excite us all over the next 10 years or so and I think he is a better player than Jesse so I'd be inclined to pass on Jesse unless we can get him as a rookie selection.

You know what, CA, I would rather a young fella that has a go at the game the way Jesse did, than one who waits for things to happen. you can rein him back if needed, but it is much harder to make them go harder.

"One of the best small forwards in the draft" is quite the qualified praise.

Of the 10 small forwards in the draft, he's in the top 10.

Plus a nice plug for the club....."They've been awesome for my development allowing me to have access to not only the facilities but the coaches. Freo's been massive for me and I'm excited to see what the future holds," he said.

Jesse is a very different player to Henry.

Jesse has always played as a forward and is a natural small forward who's pretty solidly built for a kid his age. He earnt his way into the Souths side across the season and didn't look out of place, regularly sparking his side and showing flashes of talent.

Henry was a wiry winger/half forward who ran through the midfield while being capable of playing forward. He's played as a forward due to the severe knee injury he had when drafted and the resulting lack of pre-season/fitness he had. He'll move up the ground into the midfield as he builds himself up so they aren't a like for like at all.

Jesse would be a huge get at pick 40+ but he probably goes before then. If he lasts, we'll match a bid immediately.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

“Flashes of talent” is a descriptor that causes me some concerns. We already have a few of those players. “Consistently performs at a high level” would be a welcome addition to our forward line and it also wins you premierships.

You want a 17yo playing league WAFL footy for a premiership contender as a forward pocket to be consistently good? That's not a standard anyone is going to meet.
