TOPIC: Remember a bloke called Toby Green

Walter the baker Remember a bloke called Toby Green 2 years 6 months ago #1

Finally the saga is over. The independent tribunal, who’s members were selected by the AFL, have agreed with the AFL and independently imposed a six week penalty.
I don’t mind the outcome but I’m not so convinced by the transparency of the process.

Wasn't there supposed to a hearing tonight?

Let's just do away with things like hearings and stuff. There's no place in footy for people who might want to defend themselves.

I'm with WtB on this. Probably the right result but the process is typical AFL...dodgy af.

This whole process seems incredibly dodgy.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I thought you were going to say Freo have traded Rory Lobb and their next three years' second round picks to GWS for Toby Green

Gillon McLachlan needs to apologise. He undermined the entire system.

The AFL have the right to appeal. It's inappropriate for the CEO to provide commentary before the appeal.

And six weeks is brutal. Utterly brutal and doesn't serve a purpose.

If a club had appealed on such flimsy grounds it would have cost them thousands of dollars. The AFL had no right to appeal, they merely had the ability to appeal.

Wait, so who should appoint the Appeals Board?

If you think Toby only sorta meant to bump the umpire then three weeks seems about right. But that’s not what the Tribunal found. They found that Greene was aggressive, demonstrative and disrespectful in walking into the umpire.

If that’s what they thought, then three weeks is pretty light on. The Appeals Board thought that based on that finding of fact, the suspension was manifestly inadequate. They’ve obviously put the 15,000 registered umpires higher in their priorities than one player.

Gil mentioned that it was "hard to reconcile“ the suspension length given the finding of fact, once, a month ago. That is exactly what the appeal was about so when asked if they were considering appealing I’m not sure what he’s supposed to say. It’s hardly trying to sway the Appeals Board to state in words why they are appealing.

I don’t know what you’re all so upset about.

The boss told them what decision he wanted. They then made that same decision.

It's a terrible way to conduct things.

And what sort of clown show is the appeals board.

"It could’ve been a female umpire." - Tribunal chairman David Jones.

Making up his own arguments, and ridiculous ones at that.

Morgan, if the fact that the AFL appoints and controls it's own investigations, appoints and controls it's own tribunal and appoints and controls any appeal panel doesn't give rise to concerns about conflicts of interest, then there is something wrong with the way you are looking at it.

I have no problem with the six weeks. If you intentionally walk into an umpire in some sort of attempt to be a tough guy or to try and intimidate an umpire then you have no complaint about any repercussions. Greene was utterly stupid and will have to pay the price for that.

I don't agree that the AFL shouldn't have appealed. If they felt the penalty was insufficient, that is plenty of reason to appeal.

My concern is the total lack of transparency in the process and the lack of accountability on those making these important decisions. If an organisation is going to appeal against itself to itself, then that is an open invitation for corrupt behaviour.

The CEO of that same organisation should not be making any public comment prior to the matter being finalised. It's a very clear statement to the panel members that the organisation that is paying you wants a particular outcome. There wouldn't be too many QCs who would miss a message that obvious.

On a much lighter note though, Gleeson has put himself in the running for Stand Up Comedian of the Year with this line:

“The image, integrity and the reputation of Australian football must be protected."

For an organisation that subordinates every principle to the almighty dollar and 'home' teams, claiming they want to protect the image, integrity and reputation is hilarious. The AFL definition of those terms is not something I would want to see protected.
