TOPIC: Brodie and More?

Gold Coast are in a conundrum. They've signed up far too much of their list and are now forced to trade a few contracted players to make room for the minimum 3 selections clubs have to take into the draft. There are several players rumoured to be open to moving but one who has openly declared he wants to leave for more opportunity is Will Brodie.

I've spoken about my interest in him before and he was given little opportunity again this season behind GC's huge number of inside midfielders. He may not be the outside speed we need but he's young, very talented, a freo fan and just won GC's ressies best and fairest. He's played some great games for Gold Coast (in particular a run through 2019 where he was very impressive) but has struggled to get in the side this season ahead of Miller, Greenwood, Swallow, Rowell and Anderson.

Now the other side to this is, GC need to get rid of contracted players and effectively buy other clubs interest while having been handed pick 19 as a bonus to help them in trade deals and make them competitive. This article mentions the Roos going after McPherson with the rumoured trade involving GC's pick 19 heading to them as well in exchange for later picks.

My question is, would you trade Freo's future 2nd round pick for Brodie and pick 19 this year?

Get it done Belly.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yes I had the same thought Biz. This is why I believe Geelong are holding off on Clark as they are waiting to see what we end up with. I’d be more inclined to do a deal with GC so that we trade for Brodie absorb some of his salary then make the deal with picks after trade period. This way pick 27 is the only pick available to Geelong.

Good thinking and there's no way I would give Geelong the Pick 19 if we got it. With Clark it's pick 27 or the deal is off.

I should point out, pick 19 is incredibly valuable as it will be the first pick of the second draft night. Over the past few seasons we've seen a number of clubs barter and give up a lot for the first pick on the second night in an effort to secure a player who has slid out of the first round.

For example, Brisbane gave up pick 23 and a future 2nd rd pick just to move 1 spot higher to 22 and grab Deven Robertson. So in theory, we could turn our future 2nd rd pick into Brodie, a pick in the 20's and another future 2nd rd pick. An incredibly unlikely situation but it goes to show the value of the first pick in Rd 2 of the draft.

I had thought that Will Brodie was a West Aussie looking to return home but no he is from country Victoria, Shepparton in fact. We have done well with Vic country lads so this 2016 Pick 9 looks like a great grab if we can pull it off for a future 2nd pick. 190 cms tall and 90 kgs and only age 23 showing above average stats in tackles and centre clearances and can kick a goal or 2 - looks like a player that could push for a spot in front of Acres, Crowden and Blakely, go get him Belly!

Pick 19 would be a great get. I hope Gold Coast have short memories and deal with us in good faith…

Has anyone in the AFL ever thrown in a pick on a salary dump before? Surely the Suns would look at other options before trading down 10 or so spots in the draft just to dump salary of a player who could still be useful.

Gold Coast are zero chance of giving up Brodie and a pick likely to be 26 -32 next year for pick 19 this year.
They will get far better offers than that for Pick 19..
It would be good but that wont be allowed to happen.
The AFL decision to change the draft to 2 nights is ridiculous.
It has made that pick 19 so valuable..

It's not so much of a salary dump as GC have a bunch of contracted players they NEED to trade. They need to get their list size down so they can pick the minimum 3 selections in the draft. The players being contracted means they can't just delist them, they have to either trade them out or pay out their contracts (which they won't want to do with the likes of Ben King, Lukosius and Rankine looking at new contracts worth a fair bit of coin).

The other problem is they have pick 3 and a couple of academy kids they'll need to match bids for meaning the later picks become worthless to them and will go unused. They can afford to hand off these picks to force contracted players to other clubs which is where we should do everything in our power to benefit. It's why the pies just traded a tonne of picks with GC yesterday, GC weren't going to use them this season so they tried to get something useful for them (future Collingwood selections).

Actually I think the Gold Coast are still able to pre-list academy selections, avoiding having to match a bid in the open draft. They're just included in their minimum 3 draft selections. So potentially, they may only use pick 3 on draft day.

Brodie's management have stated he wants out for more opportunity and it's a fact GC have too many contracted players and will be forced to hand some of them off.

The Brodie to Freo part is my speculation and hope given the above facts.
