TOPIC: The Draft

I think the problem comes from people thinking they can know something that it unknowable. There needs to be more admission that there is a huge amount of guesswork and luck and it all heavily relies on intuition.

The number of players who, 3 years later, could be traded for the pick they were taken at is not at a level that suggests it's a reliable process. I don't think that's because people are bad and their jobs, I think it's because you cannot reliably predict a senior football career from a junior football career.

Pav has a few insights about this year’s draft, that he’s been sharing with his new mates at Ch 9:

Pav’s view

The article’s 5 days old. Pretty sure at least some of you will have already seen it.

That's my point, Shane, and the more they bring performance metrics into selection, the further they get away from footy brains. Hence the sliding of players like Darcy, Walters, Ryan, Haselby?, and even Fyfe. I'm only using Freo names because they are the ones I notice more.

Played his guts out for us for years and most of us can't get his surname right. Tell you what, if Hasleby got drafted by a Victorian club it's doubtful his legacy would pose such a conundrum.

Then there's other blokes - like Stephen's brother or that little chubby cowboy fella - where no one even remembers them at all, out the door and erased from the memory bank.

Jeez, Polly, you are brave putting "Hasleby" & "Guts" in the same post.

He was looking very trim, up at the unveiling of his statue thing in Northampton.

Now there's a draftee - someone you can always count on to lift you to the win in a Derby. Game in, game out plays like a champ - along comes a Derby and he turns into SuperHase.

Expecting someone at a selection to be worth exactly that is more of a problem.

Just because someone is picked at a selection, does not mean they're worth that selection. Kids are selected ahead or after where they should be talent wise based on needs, locality, position and so many different reasons. Neither is the pick someone is traded for later in their career an accurate measure of their talent when drafted. The two aren't particularly correlated.

You could pick someone high based on their talent but if they don't have the work ethic, the support at the club and the right system to develop them, they aren't going to amount to much. Similarly, someone with less talent could be picked up late but work hard, have a great support network, coaches building systems around them and excel in their development.

Earlier draft picks give you access to the best talent and if your talent ID is as good as ours has been the past 5 years, you can make great use of it. There's a very high rate of good talent prediction on draft day but that's only part of the equation.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

A bit different to Daniel Chick. Had to ask someone if that was him in that Northampton photo.

Equivocation plays a big part in judging the draft then.

I just tried to find the Daniel Chick pic that was referred to in that last post. Google referred me to links for Adam Hunter, Daniel Kerr and Ben Cousins. I bet Chad Fletcher is wondering why he doesn’t get a mention.

Being named "Chad" would be a good place to start.
