TOPIC: The Draft

Aren't we just going to load up on the best Half Back Flankers for the next two years?

As a very average B grade back pocket player I don't want any speedy bloody forward pocket players this draft.

I've been thinking, and the evolution is evident, that longmuir is about to take the game of AFL to it's next phase.

I'm changing my mantra.

Goal-kicking half-back flankers will win you premierships.

Benning is unlikely to go in the national draft and we will be able to match a bid if he does. I can't see any way a club rates him inside their top 40, he's still very raw and will need a few years of development to grow and build his body.

I have my fingers crossed Motlop slides out of the top 40 so we can match a bid and it's looking more likely at the moment. Jesse not having a huge impact at league level through the finals campaign seems to have moved him down a lot of draft boards, despite the fact he was kicking bags when matched up on kids the same age as him earlier in the season.

I have faith our recruiters know what they're doing and will select best available, regardless of position. We still need more/better players in almost every position except half back. If we were to grab two midfielders with picks 8 and 10, I'd still be happy. There's every chance we grab a tall with 19 (or whatever it becomes) which is where a lot of the talls are projecting to be going. It should also be known, next year's draft is likely to have an over abundance of key talls and clubs may be expecting to grab some of those.

Any of Erasmus/Johnson/Ward/Rachelle/Callaghan would be great for us with our first two picks. Our ideal draft probably looks something like this:

Pick 6: Callghan/Erasmus/Ward
Pick 8: Johnson/Rachelle or one of the above
Pick 19: traded back to mid 20's along with a future 2nd coming back to us, pick JVR/Gibcus/Amiss/Williams with the mid 20's pick
Pick 61: moves into the 40's with Pie/Dog/Saint picks gobbled up in father son/academy picks. used to match Motlop bid
Pick 69: Dittmar/Sheldrick/Hough/Bazzo - whichever promising WA kid filters through this far, can afford to have the WA bias at this point of the draft
Cat B rookie Benning during the rookie draft.

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

If availability for a talented tall forward is at a ratio of, say 10:1 to a talented midfielder.

Shouldn't we be prioritizing the tall forward ahead of best available?

Honestly, I reckon its cost Fremantle a flag.

In the interests of over-correction...what about 2 forwards?
One will no doubt be injured.

What cost Freo a flag was Fyfe's kicking boot.

Tall or short almost comes second to the ability to kick. It's why Cerra is a bigger loss than just 3 years and 3 picks in the draft order.

The next person that posts that a delisted player like Sier or Constable will be the ideal fit for Fremantle.

See what I’ve done here? :)

Edit - and I’ve put it under the wrong topic. It’s the heat I tell ya.

You can't go reaching so early in the draft, it defeats the point of holding a high draft pick. You may as well trade the pick down and get more for it if you're going to grab someone at 6/8 who will still be there in the 20's. After the first couple of rounds it's a lot easier to reach and address club needs.

If you believe a midfielder is a much better player than a tall at that stage of the draft, you select the mid. The way the draft is looking, there will be some very talented midfielders available at our pick and the talls are a step behind and going later in the draft. That doesn't mean we won't pick up a tall early but I would think those available are probably likely to go later than the picks we have and there's likely better players available. Grabbing a tall at our third pick would be a better move (along with Benning being added to the list).

So what about Walker's brother. Has he popped up on anyone's radar lately?

We've got plenty of time before the draft. Identify those kids that slept with a football instead of a teddy - they are literally gold.

I can’t agree with you Biz, JVR is going to be a jet, we need to pick him, if we’re supremely confident he’ll slide to 16 I’d advocate for trying to trade 6 (8) with the lions for 14(16) and 18(20) that way we can take best available mid with 8(10) and still land JVR, it also means we can take the last pick of round 1, and then safely trade 19 (21) back a few spots, knowing we already have 3 top 20 players.
Of Amiss, JVR and Williams, Williams is the only one I see being available in the mid 20’s range.

Agree with PK. The one area we definitely need to recruit the very best we can is the forward line. Lobb and Tabener are in their late 20s and often injured. I would be megally pissed if we let JVR slide and miss him just to get a second midfielder.
