TOPIC: Interesting Quote from Gil

"I know how many people want it during the day at the MCG."

"I think you play it on its merits given the venue, the state, the circumstance."
Is this a slightly ajar door about future GF's.

so, if it’s at the MCG, it won’t be a twilight game.

if the pandemic persists and interrupts 2022 and it’s away again, it’ll be a twilight game.

There was an old theory that the reason the Japanese so staunchly defended their whaling program was because so long as the outside world were talking about whaling, which was traditional, they weren’t talking about the the rapidly shrinking bluefin tuna stocks that the Japanese were fishing.

There’s some of that about the Grand Final start time. There are plenty of reasons for the Grand Final to stay the MCG every year: one is (Victorian) tradition, the rest sort of fall away a bit if you poke at them too long.

Gil used the AFL’s showpiece event to underwrite the MCC, Medallion Club and stadium infrastructure spend from the Victorian Government, for many of our remaining lifetimes. I’m my view it was a sleazy back-room deal for which the AFL should be ashamed. They never even bothered to explain how the deal benefited the non-Victorian teams.

Gil’s legacy is served by dressing it up in tradition. He’d be a fool to change the start time.

Morgan, have you considered the possibility (or maybe Probability) that Gil is a fool.?

I think he’s prone to hubris more than foolishness.

Longer-term agreements (as measured in decades) almost always are the subject of dispute at some point because it’s impossible to predict what the commercial circumstances will be so far ahead.

Gil is a custodian of the game right now, but he was very confident the AFL GF being at the MCG every year until 2054 was the right call, and that he knew better than his successors.

I suspect at some point it look a lot like the deal in the 90s that saw non-Victorian teams ‘hosting’ finals at the MCG.

But I might be wrong. I can’t see decades into the future.

Can we be the go to state when pandemics hit? We'll get one of these every twenty years now.

Only my speculation; I know nothing: I took his quote as saying the GF will be at the MCG forever and a day, but the door might be open to a Adelaide GF (if it's Crows vs. Power) or a Perth GF (if it's Freo vs. Weagles) or Brisbane or Sydney. In all other cases, it'll be at the MCG, regardless of ladder finish.

The genie that is out of the bottle is that since the last two GFs has been out of Victoria, they simply add two extra years to the contract. If this is the case, you could have this amendment for infinity but still cater for the flexibility described above.

FWIW, I've only ever heard WA based players say that they would prefer the game to be played at the MCG, though that might change given the wonderful show they put on in Perth.

What you notice when they move it out of Melbourne is all the people who have their power removed from them when the game leaves the MCG. From something as simple as being able to trade tickets for favours to the big contracts that are handed out. Even the music in Perth had to be filtered through the deal with Mushroom Records.

The contract with the MCG is just a way to ensure continuity of that power, which is what they are really protecting. They'd have no issue breaking that deal if they had another 100k seat stadium in their home town.

Meh, Perth stuffed it. Gil went to catch the train and was told he couldn't get on the one waiting at the platform but would have to wait 10 minutes for the next one arriving any minute. Then he went to get in the ground and found he couldn't because the magic temporary fencing fairies had been at it again. Then he went to leave from level 5 and found he couldn't because there weren't enough escalators and the levels below had to clear the platforms with the help of lollipop people before he could move. He duly decided the MCG was a better proposition for public mental health.

Only very slightly more seriously... I won't be surprised to see some reconsideration of all this nepotism when QLD have the olympic redevelopment and close to 100K capacity stadium and a non-male replaces Gil in his job.

If the MCG has the GF next year then I reckon they should have a twilight event just like WA & QLD did previously. That way they can prove to themselves that they have the "better" venue and "Victoria" does it better...

Everyone knows they should. Even them. Which, ironically, is part of the reason that they won't.

Gil won't go for a twilight GF in Melbourne, he's worried that the Shadows will disappear when the sun goes down. Who will he get for the half time entertainment then?

Ryan Daniels ,article in this morning's West.
All about the fact it ain't the VFL anymore, big surprise.
The powers that be should wake up and be fair.
Lot of scenarios about teams that finish top and get to Gf ,should host it.
Traditions like the Brownlow,Norm Smith ,past records of the Vfl should all be changed as it is the AFL now.
I like his enthusiasm ,but not only him ,there are rumblings around for the same thing to happen. The stupid contract for the MCG,is an absolute joke.
Anyway i doubt it will happen in my lifetime.
