Perth lord mayor and Channel Seven presenter Basil Zempilas has copped a swift blowback to an idea to acknowledge footy fans throughout the country during Saturday's AFL Grand Final.

With Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs set to face-off at Perth Stadium, Zempilas used his Twitter account to encourage spectators to applaud footy fans who could not be there on the day.

This thread has been very educative for me from a self improvement perspective. I thought I was relatively free of prejudice, but I now realise that I am flawed. I didn’t have a view one way or the other on the stand and clap suggestion until I heard that it was Basil’s idea, then I suddenly disliked it. I’m not sure if I can do better.
