I don’t think it was a poll as such, more a Facebook post from
7AFL’s socials team.
Still, as far as pointless exercises go, I think they got it mostly right. Speaking of pointless, my top 10 jumpers of the 2021 AFL season are:
i. Carlton home jumper. I hate to admit it, but it’s a really fine looking jumper.
ii. GWS ‘never surrender’ guernsey: The orange really pops on the black. It was introduced as a clash jumper for the Sydney derby, but it’s a striking jumper and I’d expect it to take on more prominence from now on.
iii. Sydney Indigenous guernsey: Fun fact, as well as looking awesome, the black swan is a historical artefact. The ‘swans’ nickname for Sydney / South Melbourne traces back to the number of WA players in the old South Melbourne teams. I love that Sydney have kept this jumper for a few years.
iv. Freo’s green away jumper: An absolute ripper. It is so far superior to the white chevron jumper it’s not funny. Garlick is foolish for not considering making this a permanent part of the kit.
v. Adelaide’s yellow clash strip (long sleeves): Clash jumpers get a bad rap, but rather than roll out a boring white jumper, Adelaide used one of its primary colours to striking effect that also practically avoided clashes.
vi. Brisbane retro jumper. It just just looks objectively better than their rather boring home jumper.
vii. Sydney ‘South Melbourne’ jumper. Works well as a clash jumper, nice clean design, and historical significance. Top marks all around.
viii. Geelong long sleeve jumper. There’s nothing noteworthy about hoops, but I’m a sucker for the hoops on the sleeves of a long-sleeve jumper. It seems wonderfully old-timey to me.
ix. St Kilda white jumper: Again, clash jumpers are tough
to pull off, but I honestly think St Kilda’s white jumper looks better than their black jumper.
x. Honourable mention: Port’s Prison Bar jumper. I think this year they only wore it like petulant children in the change room, but is a ripping jumper.
