A key midfielder eh Simon? Now repeat after me.......” I want a premiership in two years” very good! Now.......” Lachie Neale will give us the edge we need!” Very good Simon!! Now repeat every two hours until Belly has done the right thing!

Lose Cerra, add 29yo injury plagued Neale and we go from 12th to Premiers?
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

11th actually, Biz - it's not as bad as you make out. Easy - making sure the OOFTITS get the wooden spoon would be a bonus.

I'm starting to worry for Lachie Neale's health. No wonder he wants to get his family back to Perth, he could go at any moment.

Shane, what is the worth of Lachie Neale in your view? Bizkit has been clear and consistent on his views. I know you've got us all covered, as you clearly are the calm one in room. So could you tell me what in these circumstances you'd give up to get him back?

Please don't counter with, "I don't know but maybe dont be so hysterical about things, all he's said is he may want to come back at this stage. Its all of you that are blathering hysterically about giving up draft picks".

As I type that and read it back slowly to myself its got me thinking. Hmmm.

In any case, what would you pay for him?

He's worth half a Cerra.

But I'd go as high as two thirds in a pinch, because he's worth more to Brisbane in their position than he is to Fremantle.

Also worth noting that Bizkit spends a lot of time watching juniors and us not getting them spoils his entertainment. So they are worth more to him than Lachie Neale is to me, because I want to see the seniors do well before Fyfe retires.

It's true I value the kids available more than the average punter but that's more of a slight on the average punter than anything.

Fyfe, Sunny and co will be the icing on the cake of our next premiership push if we do things right, not the cake. They were the reason for our push from 2010 onwards with the likes of Hase, Headland and co the extra's on top. Our next push will be with the youth we've built up and if we continue to take half measures, we'll remain in the middle rungs of the ladder.

Neale doesn't fit our list and while it's correct that a recent brownlow medalist is worth a first round pick, he's definitely not worth that to us. Why would we sacrifice our list position for him, the onus is on Neale and Brisbane to get it done if he wants to be back in Perth. We owe Neale nothing.

We need outside speed and skill, we need key forwards and goal kickers. That's our priority and what we should be targeting, not another short inside midfielder who is nearing the end of their career. Realistically he should be targeting the OOFTIT's to return but they will have absolutely no room in their salary cap which makes us the only option.

If Neale doesn't come back to us, it doesn't hurt us at all and we shouldn't be forced into a trade unless it's on our terms.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

If us dockerlanders can see the writing on the wall with a potential Neale trade you can only trust those in the actual know will do the right thing. He would undoubtedly help in the very short term but after a few years the investment will bite us on the ass as he becomes slower and past his prime. Bums on seats and hope is what the corporates want, ultimate success is what we want. Play hardball, get him cheap or leave him be. The team is finally showing some promise via the draft, don’t let a guy who bailed on us put a spanner in the works. No one has even mentioned how this could possibly mess with the team’s cultural dynamic. Too many alphas can sometimes create a lot of friction. #notoneale - unless it’s only for a second rounder.

Because I think you can get stuck in a permanent mindset of list potential. That's what is happening at Carlton - next year will always be their year. It's based on assumig what you've got will be constant and what you get will go on top of that. Teams are always losing players, to age, to injury, to trades. You can't ignore that stuff, any more than you can go the other way and not bring some young players on. At some point you have to say - what's the best we can do with what we've got right now.

And based on industry wide results of the draft, taking Neale for a first round draft pick is getting 5 years of quality footballer in exchange for taking a roll of a dice. Not even a coin toss. Just like I think you'd be mad to not swap a couple of first round picks if Cerra came your way.

Take the money, not the box.

Sure it's possible to be a Carlton but it's pretty clear we aren't. They continually top up with middle age players that go nowhere, look at Saad and Williams coming in on big contracts and costing high draft picks. Throw in guys like Betts, McGovern, Martin, Newnes and half a dozen ex gws players. Their best moves have been grabbing kids in the draft like Walsh and Mackay.

We were at the top 6/7 years ago and we burnt out the list. We kept topping up till there was no youth left and we fell to the bottom. We only half committed to a rebuild and it did little to help us before getting some actual quality kids into the side over the past 3/4 years.

We now have a good starting point with quality youth but we clearly need more (especially now we're losing Cerra). If we go back to avoiding youth, we may improve in the short term but not the long and we'll burn out our next generation.

Neale is an overall improvement on our list and playing 22 but not a large one and won't move us into premiership contention while he's still able to have an impact. We need more than that in the short term and in the long, it will be the youth that gets us there.

When it comes to the downsides of the trade not going through, there is little incentive for us to play ball. If we don't trade, we continue to draft top quality kids and fill the needs of our playing list. If Brisbane don't trade then they risk Neale playing from WA or sitting out altogether with no compensation and then we look at a trade of a 30yo in 2022. The onus is on them to get this done and our pick 27 is as high as I would go (which is still likely to be a good kid like Williams, Dittmar, Browne or whoever that I'd still take ahead of Neale personally).

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

From time-to-time I’ve suggested Bizkit overrates the value of draft picks, because we tend to forget how tricky drafting is. Let’s assume we give up our pick 8 for Neale, which to my eye would be fair value for someone of Neale’s talent and age. Here’s all the pick 8s since 2000 (noting that father-sons and academy picks skew this a little).

Daniel Motlop
Jimmy Bartel
Luke Brennan
Raphael Clarke
John Meesen
Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls
Ben Reid
Lachie Henderson
Ty Vickery
John Butcher
Dyson Heppell
Billy Longer
Sam Mayes
Luke McDonald
Peter Wright
Callum Ah Chee
Griffin Logue
Nick Coffield
Tarryn Thomas
Caleb Serong
Nik Cox

You know what you are getting with Lachie Neale. When you pick at 8, you might get a Jimmy Bartell, or you might get John Meesen. On average, you probably get someone like Griffin Logue. In the right circumstances I think you’d make that trade.

I just don’t think this is the right circumstances. I think Neale’s best skills and biggest deficiencies overlap too greatly with those of our existing squad.

At the end of Neale’s current contract will he be a free agent ? I’m not sure how that works seeing as he would of only spent 5 years at Brisbane.
