I was thinking maybe we could get a free agent to replace Adam Cerra. There is Cam Guthrie, Luke Parker and Matt Crouch.. These mids will take up some salary cap space but not draft picks.. They are a bit old but still should be in our premiership window.. The thing is we don't need to give up any draft capital and we could keep drafting youth with those picks.. At least someone like Luke Parker or Cam Guthrie could help to bring the youth through and pass on some wisdom.. It seems like a way to have your cake and eat it too

Not opposed to it but the hard thing for interstate clubs is to entice free agents to move states. Often players of this age have young families. You have to move kids to different schools wives and girlfriends away from families and work. It’s more than just offering a good salary and a job opportunity to the player.

The one thing that bothers me about these free agents is their age. True, our Premiership window could open as early as next year but we already have 3 of our own 30+ midfield stars in Walters, Fyfe and Mundy and to bring in another would just keep the young guns Serong, Brayshaw, Young and maybe Crowden and Valente out of the midfield mix for a further period of time and stifle their development.

The only Free Agent or "mature aged player" that we should consider is not likely to be available - a key position forward/second ruck and that would become very important if Lobb was to leave. Midfielders are best drafted and with 2 top 20 picks we should be able to secure both a "Cerra" replacement and a young tall forward. It only took Serong a few games to start delivering value and his second year was remarkable. We should play finals next year but really our Premiership window is in 2 years time and hopefully it will last for years so no need for quick fixes, we dont need any more "almost" players from other clubs. I still have high hopes for Valente, I hope he stays around and O'Driscoll looks to be a player who could give us impact in the midfield.

If you take a good player as free agent, if anyone takes a good player as a free agent for that matter, you lose value in your draft picks.

You don't want to be taking some 27 year old at the peak of his career from Geelong and then the AFL giving them a couple of early draft picks.

The ones I think you're talking about are guys like Steven May and Jake Lever who were targeted by Melbourne to build their defence around, a plan that is looking close to fruition. The Cats on the other hand have bought in midfielders Isaac Smith and Higgins from North Melbourne who haven't really set the world on fire and are just keeping young talent like Jordan Clark, Charlie Constable and Quinton Narkle on the outer and looking for greener pastures.

Stephen May and Jake Lever were not free agents. Tom Lynch was a free agent. Patrick Dangerfield and Buddy Franklin were free agents.. Also Jeremy Cameron was a free agent.. I thought it was interesting that Cam Guthrie was an unrestricted free agent.. That means if he chooses a destination Geelong can't match the bid.. What the team gets back has a lot to do with ladder position.. The most that Geelong could get back for Cam Guthrie is pick 13-18... but it might even be a second round compension pick if the money and length of the deal is not massive.. Getting someone like Seb Ross or Jack Billings on a wing would mean no draft capital given up.. If we grabbed Jordan Clark, Quinton Narkle or Charlie Constable that would cost us a valuable pick in the draft.
