Can someone please explain the structure of the panel that will adjudicate this appeal.
I understand that the MRO is the first level that normally makes judgement and is currently a single individual who is an ex-player, with the next level being the tribunal that is made up of three ex-players, but who makes up the appeal panel (which only sits on extremely rare occasions)?

Thanks Shane. If that’s the case (and I appreciate that you weren’t certain) then the appeal panel is also made up of ex-players that theoretically have the same level of experience and expertise as the original tribunal panel. Strangely they being asked to pass judgement on a decision made by their peers (ie other members of the AFLs pool). That seems unusual when most appeal structures require that the decision makers are total independent.
Also, while the nature of the subject matter and the AFLs structure makes alternative appeal board arrangements problematic, it does seem odd that the AFLs in-house arrangement means that it is appealing a decision to a panel of people that it selects and presumably pays. That’s not something that would fly in the real world.
