The WA vs SA U18 game has just been announced as back on in this article. It will be our first proper glimpse at the state carnival and the ability of this years draft crop against similar opponents with the game scheduled for 1pm at Lathlain park (and should be on Kayo).

Given we have pick 8 (dropping to 10 after Daicos/Darcy bids) with the potential to add more high picks, I thought a few people would be keen to see some of the talent available. From SA you'd wanna keep an eye on Jason Horne-Francis who idolises Nat Fyfe and is brilliant to watch. Matthew Roberts and Arlo Draper are also in the mix for the top 10 on draft night and will be looking to win the midfield battle against the West Aussies.

For WA, the tall talent has enjoyed all the plaudits this season as a number of big forwards have pushed their name's in front of recruiters. Freo fan Jacob Van Rooyen will lead things for WA despite having dropped down some recruiters rankings due to injuries and inconsistent form at league level despite still dominating when heading back to the colts. Jack Williams has gained a lot of fans this season with his strong marking and aggression around the ground while Jye Amiss is a dead eye in front of goal, currently leading the colts goal kicking by a big margin.

Leading the midfield will be 193cm Matthew Johnson who has also mysteriously slid outside of top 10 draft rankings despite consistently strong performances and drawing comparisons to Pendlebury and Mundy when moving through traffic. Neil Erasmus is the forward/midfielder who has shot into top 10 draft calculations after proving he's not just a high flying mid-sized goal kicker, he can also rack up the ball and play as a powerful stoppage midfielder (drawing a number of Fyfe comparisons). Josh Browne has been the standout midfielder in the colts having racked up incredibly high stat lines while playing as an inside mid who can get free on the outside and kick goals. Then there's Kade Dittmar who arrived this season after a long stint on the sidelines with injuries to tear up the colts competition and put his name in draft contention as a big bodied midfielder.

On top of these are the Freo NGA prospects such as the 197cm Eric Benning who's had a fantastic last month or two of footy that's thrown his draft chances wide open. Jesse Motlop has been going about his business with little fuss, breaking into South Freo's league side and looking good. Hopefully he has a shocker so we can grab him outside the top 40 on draft day. Jed Hagan who won't be available till next year has also found his way into the side as an underager and will be looking to shut down SA's small forwards

There's plenty to see so I hope there's a few people down there to catch the game and check out what could be heading our way in November.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz. if you were Freo and had to draft a player right now (obviously it will change closer to the real draft) with pick 6(8) who would you take ?

And separately to the first question, who in your oppinion is the better forward out of JVR, Amiss and Williams ?

It'd probably be a Vic midfielder to be honest, someone to replace Cerra and take over from Fyfe/Mundy/Walters. Erasmus and Johnson have potential to reach their heights but we need to see them against the Vic's and the rest of their draft class in the national champs.

I think it would be a large reach to take any of the WA KPF's in the top 10 given what they've produced so far with all of them in that 15-30 range. JVR has dropped down a lot of rankings this season as others have risen but he's still my first picked of the WA talls. The only one getting senior opportunities and in a strong team, he's proven he can produce well at league level and if not for glandular fever and some injuries, I think he'd have solidified his position as the best KPF in the draft. He's also been thrown around the field at Claremont and had monster games running through the middle and getting into defence. The only concern is he's probably a similar size and player to Treacy except he may be a bit better up the ground and athletically.

Williams is probably my next favourite although it's close with Amiss. The thing that gives Williams the tick for me is his versatility up the ground in the ruck and his fantastic contested marking. He's probably slightly undersized to be the forward/ruck I'd like us to draft but he'd still be capable at AFL level eventually but much more of a forward. He's hasn't had senior opportunities this season but was the best forward on the ground against Geelong's VFL side in the academy match.

Amiss seems to be a pure full forward and a bit more raw than the other two but he's proven to be an absolute dead eye in front of goal with good acceleration off the mark when leading. I do worry about the rest of his game and his versatility but you can't argue with his results and efficiency in front of the big sticks. While he leads the colts goalkicking by a lot, JVR actually averages more goals per game at the same level and that's while playing stints in the middle.

Benning is a left field option and I can't see him getting inside the top 40 picks without some huge performances at the championships. He's most likely a Cat B rookie chance rather than someone who will go in the main draft. He's still raw but that's what the rookie list and NGA academy is for. If he continues to develop at a rapid rate, he's the guy who could be the forward/ruck we need.

By the sounds of it, and without seeing any of these blokes play, Amiss is what we need. I don't care if he can't play in the centre, ruck, or hold down CHB, if he can kick goals at better than 65%% accuracy, he is what we have lacked for the last 5 years (or more). Take him first then look at what else we need.

saw him live a few weeks ago - he has an amazing left foot kick.
So simple and accurate. He would be a great get.

Not from W.A. but what are the chances of Mac Andrew lasting until our first pick? Check him out here.

I don't subscribe to The West and the AFL site hasn't updated the fixtures. What day is the game?

I haven't seen as much of Andrew given the Vics shifting covid status. He looks to be very raw still but has come on in leaps and bounds this season and looks quite exciting. I personally don't have him as high as a lot of others seem to which is based on his output so far. A lot of the buzz around him is due to his unique athletic profile (200cm with great athleticism and ball handling), however I haven't seem him use it often or well enough in games.

That's not to say he won't get there but I think he's a very risky selection and not a top 10 lock as others do. I'd probably have him around the pick 20 mark. However given the covid interruptions to this draft group over the past 2 years, there's a degree of risk to most selections out of the East. We'll find out more about him if he gets to play some championship games.

Rhett Bazzo started out the season up forward with mixed results and was quickly shifted back to defense before some niggles kept him out. He's a good size and plays well in defence but has probably fallen away a touch from where he was at the start of the season. He's one who will be looking to have a big carnival for WA marshaling defence and pushing his draft chances higher.

Chipper I've seen less of although he seemed to find a tonne of the footy in the two games I saw. He looks to be a little more of an inside mid than outside player with silky skills. His more valuable touches tend to be winning the ball on the inside and slamming it on the boot but he's done a good job of getting the footy on the outside and showcasing that side of his game across this season. He's more of a later pick (30-60 range) but depending how he goes in the champs against better opposition, he could push higher.

The WA vs SA game is 1pm this Sat at Lathlain. Normally the national champs are shown on Kayo and the afl website so you should be able to watch it regardless.

I love Max Chipper - He is a ball magnet and has an amazing tank.
I have seen him play a lot even from a young age and have been waiting for him to get to draft age. Skills are much better than some say. I know they are not suppose to tag in colts but he always seems to have fresh opponents right on his tail..
I cant believe he is an emergency tomorrow.
I suspect the slime may have something to do with that.
I would love to see him in purple

Neil Erasmus who is the leading WA prospect on draft day has had to pull out of the game so Chipper is in for a run tomorrow. A bit disappointing not to see Erasmus have a go at this level given his likely top 10 credentials but it'll give Chipper a look.
