So, Bizkit, what do we do with Logue? I agree he's not a defender, but he should get a run on the ball to see how he goes. If he is no good on the ball and no good as an undersized defender, then the options are move him forward (which doesn't suit him) or put him on the trade block to get someone in to fill our needs. Fremantle for too long persist with people that they can't find a home for until their trade value has diminished.

Is his kicking good enough to be delivering into the forward line? This has been one of our biggest weaknesses this year and will be exacerbated with Cerra's departure. We need to clone Mundy.

I don't think he's a bad defender, just not a midfielder. He's a bit short for the number 1 KPD role but as number 2/3 he should be alright and offer plenty.

Ideally we'd like Pearce fit and able to be the shut down tall defender although his last 3 games of the season he was pretty horrible in the role, repeatedly being out positioned and outmarked. Logue's marking and reading of the play is nowhere near the level of Brennan Cox so maybe Logue takes the second tall and Cox plays on the third/resting ruck while trying to run off and intercept?

Having said that, I still like Cox as a forward so I'd be hoping Hamling makes a miraculous recovery and can help Pearce out with Logue becoming the rebounding third tall defender.

I think Logue cops too much stick on here, he appears to be an easy target.Yes he makes some mistakes but he is hardly alone there playing for Fremantle FC. I can't fault his commitment, effort and bravery yet some on here were having a go at his awareness, football nous, speed and general kicking skills. Take a moment and go through our list, he is far from the worse kick in our team.

Although Buddy kicked 6 goals on him this year, Logue did a tremendous job himself and was listed in our best players for that game. In fact go back a couple of years ago and watch his multiple run down efforts vs the Swans against Nick Blakey from memory, which were inspirational. Even this year after Tex Walker kicked a couple early against us when he was kicking goals for fun, Logue blanketed him from that point onwards and you could see how frustrated Walker became as the game wore on, or how about Logue's efforts vs the Tigers this year. Reiwoldt and Lynch were equally frustrated and ineffective.

Quite often this season Logue was our number 1 defender due to the fact that Pearce was out injured, therefore he was taking on the premium forward and quite often fighting out of his depth, yet I don't recall him being towelled up until it came to the Geelong game where he was up against Ratugolea who is a man mountain.

Talk of him being traded is just stupid, even people questioning why we took him at pick 8. Yes we could have grabbed Tim English over Logue but then we wouldn't have discovered Sean Darcy.

I rate Logue and he is only going to get better, remember he is only 23 years old and has been suffered a number of injuries. He is far from a list clogger and is an asset to our team.

I think he gets too much backing if anything with a lot of excuses for his performances. There's not a lot of abuse of him which was pretty evident when Buddy pulled his pants down in the wet, kicking 6 goals in a losing side. Logue literally paid him little attention and let Buddy roam around 10m off him, picking up loose balls outside 50m and dobbing goals. It was a pretty average performance in what should have been as favourable conditions as he's likely to get as a defender.

Same goes for the Adelaide game where he tried to play loose and had a couple kicked on him early by Tex to give Adelaide a good start. Freo dominated the rest of the game which is what saved Logue having more kicked on him.

Playing on the main forward isn't his go in any case, he wants to play loose on a smaller opponent but doesn't have the instincts or ability to read the play that Ryan and Cox possess who would be ahead of him in the role. He's got a good long kick so I'm not too worried about his disposal or delivery out of defence unless he tries to pinpoint shorter passes. For now he's probably best left as the second tall defender while he tries to develop those skills and learn off our other defenders. If Hamling ever becomes fit then we'll have some good competition back there and I think Logue loses the battle for the best 22 against Pearce, Hamling and Cox.

Just noticed this thread today, Haven't we been down this track numerous times before Biz? What has Griff ever done to you? I think we fall into the trap too many times of expecting a perfect package in every footballer we get regardless of the meritorious performances that they put up. We are never going to get a 22 on the park who are top 5 picks and never make a mistake. Deal with it. Griff is a pretty good, better than average defender who works on his craft to become a better defender but I see his long term worth as a midfeilder in the mould of Pav when he played there. His kicking may not be perfect but he's young and seems to strive for improving his game.
Right now we seem to be in a battle to retain Lachie Schultz, not the best small forward in the game but one who bleeds Purple and gives his all. Instead we covet the unattainable, players who went at picks 1or 2 as we did for Jesse Hogan and look how that finished. My point is to make the best of the list we have, develop them to improve their strengths and draft players to fit needs not the best player available and get off the backs of guys who are busting a gut week in and week out. We forget that some of our club greats were, in reality, battlers who made the most of their abilities like Shane Parker, Antoni Grover, Mcca and others. They are the greats of our club.

I'm not having a go at Logue, I'm questioning the over the top praise. Logue is decent as a second/third defender as I said but nothing indicates he should be a midfielder. He's also been quite average and often exploited as the main tall defender but that's to be expected of someone undersized who doesn't really fit the role.

For a comparison Ryan was undersized playing the role last season and did exceptionally, not just shutting down his opponent but being able to rebound off them. Logue has more of a height advantage but has been far worse in the same setting. I think the bar for Logue to succeed is quite low so when he doesn't get pantsed, people tend to rave on about his performance. The expectation of him should be a bit higher, especially considering he's pretty gifted athletically and has a good long kick.

I expect him next season to hold a lot more of the marks he goes for and really improve on his ability to read the play so he can roll off and intercept. If he does then he'll hold his spot in the 22 but if not, he'll be playing at Peel assuming we miraculously have fit key defenders.

Love the passion

Fat side of the ground defensive winger for Logue? Any chance Biz?

Job description:
- cut off opposition switch by having enough leg speed and endurance to get to lots of contests.
- act as the get out of jail under pressure kick target out of our defence for us (make it a contest so no interceptions and repeat entries)
- if get the ball when we are attacking go fwd (kick or run) before opposition can set up.

I think Logue is developing nicely as a third tall who can play taller if required. He’s still only 23. My concern with him, if anything, is that he's put on too much bulk. Already there aren't many players who can out-muscle him, which is good, but I think keeping or even improving his agility would be more useful...but I don't think he's got the agility to be a midfielder.

For what it’s worth, I think people here put a bit too much emphasis on 'big' midfielders, because we had some success with a big midfield of Fyfe, Mundy and Barlow in the past. But having those guys in the middle (and later Neale) worked with a game style that was based almost entirely on winning contested possessions. That style has limits (especially these days), so I’d rather we play a more expansive style, and have guys who can cover the ground a bit better, and consistently hit targets.

In Darcy, Serong and Brayshaw we’ve got the makings of a really good midfield. Tucker can play more inside (if we keep him) and Valente at 187cm isn’t small assuming he exists. Fyfe still has a couple of years, and Michael Tuck played 426 games, so I’m assuming Mundy will at least equal that.

If we wanted someone bigger on the wings I would rather it be Tabs and Lobb rotating through wing and forward.

It’s all good. Keep Logue where he is.

I liken Logue to a Kepler Bradley with the natural footballing ability taken out. Honest, strong, toiler, bit manic but will sting his side with outpositioning and the odd over-exuberant puppy decision.

I do think a big bodied midfielder is an asset. It's very hard to bring down Mundy or Fyfe in a tackle. In fact the best midfielders in the league are probably those, and I don't particularly like the term, midfield bulls. eg. Oliver, Dangerfield, Martin, Cripps, Bontempelli, Parker, Taranto, etc

391, I reckon that is a spot he could hold down. He is not as bad as Biz reckons at reading the play, and when he is not playing on a key forward, he reads it well and backs himself to run forward. That sort of play could cover for our smaller, faster inside players in the middle, if he was running the wing.

Haven’t we just ditched most of our second tier defenders? Can’t afford to lose Logue from the group too
