Most of the talent league-wide comes from outside of Western Australia. Other clubs take Western Australian players ahead of us. The fact that we have large number of Western Australian players demonstrates we disproportionately favour WA talent.
In the first round I think we should take the best talent available. I think after that it gets a bit speculative, so you might as well take the local guy.
Also, there does seem to be a bigger pull from home for guys from inner-city Melbourne than regional Victoria, for example. I do think that should be considered.
One thing I'd like to know is whether trading of draftees after they have been picked would help or hurt the system. It might be too much of an emotional roller-coaster for the kids and their families, but if, for example, Footscray had come to us after they had picked Naughton at 9, and said 'we really like Cerra, you like Naughton but not at pick 5, how about we give you Naughton and next year's first for Cerra' I wonder what we would have said.
